Newsweek Research Center Internship Summer 2009

The Newsweek Research Center has an internship opportunity for one library school student for the Summer 2009 semester.

The Research Center uses leading-edge information technologies to deliver research to our editorial staff in offices in New York and around the world.

Our interns will work on indexing of our cover image database, assist with copy cataloging and adding links to our catalog, and adding subject links on our research intranet. There is also the opportunity to assist with news research.

Requirements: completion of at least one information organization /cataloging course, an online searching course, and currently matriculating in an MLS program. CANDIDATES SHOULD REVIEW THEIR PROGRAM’S REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY (E.G. CREDITS NEEDED) BEFORE APPLYING.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is detail-oriented and interested in the technical services aspects of librarianship, including metadata and tagging. Hands-on cataloging or database management preferred. Must have some experience with HTML authoring and Microsoft desktop applications including Word and Excel. Interest in news and current events a plus.

INTERN MUST BE AVAILABLE DURING REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS,PREFERABLY TWO DAYS PER WEEK. THIS IS AN UNPAID INTERNSHIP TO BE DONE FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT.

The Digital Rights and Alliances Intern will support the Digital Rights team with preparation/proofing of ebook metadata and other ebook reports, assembly of ebook lists and assisting with rights clearance and online research.

Essential Accountabilities:
Assist in preparing/proofing ebook metadata at existing ebook partners.

Assist in assembling ebook lists using iPub, MPD, and contracts database.

Data entry into rights management system.

Assist in preparing file format availability reports using content management system.

Assist in rights clearance for digital licensing.

Conduct online research as directed by the department staff.

Qualifications

Proficiency with MS Excel and Internet.

Familiarity with MS Word and databases.

Excellent communication (verbal and written), analytical and organizational skills.

Detail-oriented with a team player attitude.

Ability to multitask and handle numerous request simultaneously.

Previous internship and/or office experience in a professional environment preferred.

Overview

We’re looking for an intern MLS (or related field) candidate to assist us with carrying out daily tasks and supporting projects that allow us to provide members with the best possible service. Since we are a small organization (about 50 people total), you will obtain broad-based experience in a variety of areas related to information science, while reporting to the Web Content Specialist.

As Web Content/Research Intern, your responsibilities will include:

· Assisting the Web Content Specialist with day-to-day content updates and audits.

· Assist in the creation of a searchable online database.

· Assist in the development of a FAQ page designed for website visitors.

· Assist with the deaccessioning of print resources.

· Assist department staff by providing background research on information requests.

· Assist with other projects as needed.

· Write new content as necessary.


Requirements


· Minimum GPA of 3.0

· Attention to detail and organizational skills

· Strong communication skills and the ability to work alone and collaboratively

· Proficient at Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel

· Knowledge of HTML language

· Experience conducting research using online databases such as Nexis, as well as print resources including vertical files and standard print reference tools


Candidates must submit a writing sample.

This internship can be full or part-time, with a minimum of 16 hours per week.
