Digital Special Collections Cataloging Opportunity, AMNH (Manhattan)

 
The American Museum of Natural History Research Library in New York City seeks volunteers for a Digital Special Collections cataloging project.

The Museum Library’s Special Collections is seeking volunteers or interns to catalog image records and input descriptive metadata for its Digital Special Collections Omeka database. The project may be viewed by visiting: http://images.library.amnh.org/digital/
 
Position description and duties:
Intern will work under the general direction of the Visual Resources Librarian and/or the Project Cataloger.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to cataloging and editing records for the image database on a variety of natural science and anthropological topics.
 
Qualification requirements:
Enrolled in or graduate of an MLS program with some library experience and/or graduate-level library classes, preferably including digital imaging or digital libraries, and cataloging.
Experience with Omeka open source software is a plus.
Interest in historic photographs and archival collections.
Familiarity with authority work. 
Strong research and writing skills.
Good interpersonal skills, responsible, reliable, detail-oriented.
Ability to work flexibly and independently.
A commitment to the project for at least one semester, for 8 hours per week.
Must be able to work on Fridays and attend training sessions.

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. The Advocacy Department influences public policy through a multi-disciplinary approach including grassroots organizing, lobbying elected officials, utilizing legal strategies, issuing policy reports, coalition building, and online activism. Our primary campaigns focus on police practices, criminal justice reform, school-to-prison-pipeline and students’ rights, and LGBT rights.
 
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Assist advocacy staff in strategizing and implementing campaigns to advance and defend civil liberties and civil rights
  • Assist advocacy staff with the input and analysis of data
  • Assist advocacy staff with policy document review and analysis
  • This position will have a particular emphasis on policing and criminal justice
 
Experience and Qualifications
  • Must have experience using Stata statistical analysis software
  • Must be comfortable using Microsoft Excel, intermediate to advanced skills preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of or interest in policing preferred
  • Must be in college or graduate school and able to receive credit for this internship

Summer 2016



The Hedda Sterne Foundation is looking for a self-motivated and detail-oriented

individual to assist in cataloging and organizing the library of the artist Hedda

Sterne (American, b. Romania 1910-2011). The library collection includes

approximately 100 linear feet of books and ephemera, including some rare and

unique volumes. The Library Intern will work closely with Foundation staff to

begin the first-ever inventory of the library collection, and help initiate a program

for the ongoing care of the collection. Tasks will include:


· sorting, organizing, and cataloging books in our library

· entering data into our collections database

· assessing books for condition issues, and in some cases rehousing fragile


or damaged items

· assisting the Foundation staff in developing a plan for the ongoing care of


the library


The successful candidate must possess excellent organizational and

communication skills and have a strong attention to detail. Experience with

Microsoft Excel is necessary. Ideal candidates will be enrolled in a MLS or artsrelated

degree program, and able to commit to two days per week, 10-5pm for at

least 8 weeks. This internship is based in our New York City office.

Summer 2016 Processing Opportunity
The JDC Archives is the institutional repository of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization since its founding in 1914. Holding over 3 miles of records documenting JDC’s global rescue, relief, and renewal work in over 90 countries during the past century, the JDC Archives is one of the world’s most significant collections for the study of modern Jewish history.
We seek students who are interested in gaining archival processing experience. The broad geographic and programmatic scope of our institutional records allows us to tailor projects to different interests.
Projects:
  • Arrange, rehouse, and describe unprocessed records of JDC’s activities around the world, including Israel, the Soviet Union, Tunisia, and Yugoslavia, from the past three decades
  • Metadata creation and management in database
  • Prepare collections for off-site storage
  • Database cleanup, such as deleting duplicate records and conducting quality control on file names and subject terms
  • Contribute to collections management procedures and documentation
  • Other special projects as they arise
Qualifications:
Proficiency in Word and Excel required. Familiarity with database procedures is recommended. Candidate must have completed at least one semester of coursework in archives or library science.  Interest in Jewish history preferred.
All opportunities are unpaid, but may be taken for course credit. Candidates will be supervised by professional archival staff and will have the opportunity to attend staff meetings and workshops. An expected schedule is 12-20 hours per week. Options are available in the NY office located in midtown Manhattan and in our offsite facility in Long Island City.

Are you currently enrolled in an MLIS program? Are you interested in gaining valuable
hands-on experience processing, describing and rehousing archival collections in an
historic academic setting? The Burke Library, one of 21 libraries in the Columbia
University system, is looking for interns!

The Union Theological Seminary Archives (UTS) collections consist of personal papers from Union’s famous faculty and students since 1836. The collections cover a wide range of historical periods and formats from one of the oldest independent seminaries in the United States, with materials ranging from correspondence describing a tour through China in the early 1900s to an historic event at Union that made the front page of the New York Times in 1970.

Tasks :

● Researching and writing finding aids (guides to archival collections)
● Creating contents lists for archival collections
● Housing historic papers in proper archival environments
● Undertaking basic preservation
● Contributing to the Burke Library Blog
● Involvement with implementation of EAD

Qualifications and Skills :

● Must be currently enrolled in a library & information studies master’s program.
● Excellent oral and written skills. Legible, neat handwriting.
● Support and training available; no prior specialist archival knowledge or of religious studies needed.
● Ability to lift heavy boxes (40lb) safely and handle weights of 15 pounds regularly.
● Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
● Capacity to manage spiral staircase and work with dusty materials.
● Knowledge of other languages, including German, French, Chinese and Japanese a plus.

Internships are unpaid and may be taken for credit through your school, depending upon your school’s policy. Interns are asked to commit for at least 10 hours per week within Monday – Friday during normal business hours, (9:30-5:30).



Interns would ideally start somewhere between May 16th and June 3rd.

Cataloging Internship, Avery Classics-Columbia U (Manhattan)

Avery Classics Cataloging Internship
Summer 2016


Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library of Columbia University is seeking an intern interested in gaining professional hands-on experience in cataloging a collection of American ephemera related to suburban development across the country. This opportunity is designed for an intern to gain experience in original cataloguing of special collections materials. .


Skills Development Interns will work with the Curator of Avery Classics and the Libraries’ Rare Book Cataloguer to develop a template for cataloguing promotional materials for real estate developments and then catalogue a collection of over 500 ephemeral items using that template. Interns should have some prior cataloging experience to be considered for this internship.


Professional Interactions/Development


Interns will attend meetings of Avery Classics staff to participate in project discussions and will be encouraged to participate in campus-wide events including tours of the conservation lab and other Columbia libraries.



Hours Requirements

Timeframe: 120 hours over 12 weeks
Schedule: 10 hours per week (All interns must commit to schedule at least four hours on one day; otherwise hours are flexible).
Working hours: Monday - Friday: 9:00am - 5:00pm.



This is an unpaid internship that must be used for credit toward a Master's Degree in a Library Science program. All students must be currently enrolled. Attendance at an orientation session is required.

Archives Interns, NY Civil Liberties Union (Manhattan)

Position: Archives Internship

The NYCLU is a statewide organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of civil liberties and civil rights for all New Yorkers. Summer 2016 archives interns will mainly focus on digitization projects and maintenance of the NYCLU’s permanent onsite collections, as well as assisting in the processing of records boxes, under the supervision of the Archives & Records Manager.

Summary of Position:

The NYCLU is about 4 years into its archives and records management program, the initial phase of which involves processing a backlog of material housed in offsite storage. Much of this material is being transferred to a university archive, where NYCLU records are being opened to researchers for the first time in its 65 year history. As we near the end of processing this backlog, we have appraised certain material to have high historic value that we would like to also maintain copies of onsite.
We are looking for 1-2 interns to help with this phase of the project. Each internship will be custom tailored to the needs of the NYCLU and the skills and interests of the intern. The various duties assigned may involve digitization, cataloging, and general maintenance of the NYLCU’s permanent onsite collections. Interns will gain hands on experience digitizing, weeding, arranging, appraising, cataloging and general processing of archival material. Additionally, interns will be exposed to the records management program and will be asked to occasionally assist with record management tasks. The internship is unpaid, but may be taken for course credit.

Qualifications:

 Must be currently enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program, or other graduate program in an archives related field.
 Must be able to commit to at least 1 day per week, 10:30-5:30 (Monday-Friday). 
 Successful applicants should have an interest in archives and records management centers in non-traditional library settings.

The Levy Library at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is offering a temporary Library Project Specialist position for the summer for students enrolled in ALA accredited library and information science graduate programs.
