Advertising Research Foundation: Summer internship

Position

The ARF Knowledge Center provides a variety of research services to help our members make better business decisions. Our mission is to organize ARF and industry knowledge and make it accessible and available to members 24x7. The Knowledge Center also provides assistance as needed to other departments in Membership, Marketing, Events, and Research. This internship would be ideal for students pursuing a graduate level library science degree from an ALA accredited academic institution and who are interested in gaining real-life work experience in Special Libraries.   

Responsibilities 

Under the supervision of a MLIS Librarian, perform a wide variety of library science-related duties to gain exposure to, and experience working in a Special Library: 

  • Provide professional reference services to members and staff. 
  • Assist in implementing a digitization project of ARF historical documents.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating in-house databases, archives and catalogs. 
  • Individual projects will be assigned to enhance learning.  
Qualifications
  • The internship requires the following: 
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university - AND - current enrollment in a Master's of Library Science program accredited by American Library Association. 
  • Experience in database and online researching. 
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Proficiency in using computer, internet, and other electronic resources. 
  • Familiarity with the advertising, marketing, and/or research industries desirable.   


Salary and Start Date 
Summer Internship will be paid at an hourly rate. The Summer Internship Program will be a 12 week program, starting on May 27th and concluding on August 16th. Summer Interns will be asked to work 20 hours/week and will be compensated at an hourly rate.

American Museum of Natural History: Digital Imaging Project Summer Internship


The American Museum of Natural History Research Library in New York City seeks a summer intern for a digital imaging project.

The Museum Library’s Special Collections is seeking an intern/volunteer to catalog image records and input descriptive metadata into an Omeka database for its Photographic Collections.  The pilot of this on-going project is Picturing the Museum: Education and Exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History which is online at: http://images.library.amnh.org/photos/index.html 

Position description and duties: 
Intern will work under the general direction of the Visual Resources Librarian.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to cataloging and editing records for the image database.  

Qualification requirements: 

  • Enrolled in or recent graduate from an MLS program with some library experience and/or graduate-level library classes, preferably to include digital imaging or digital libraries, and cataloging.  
  • Familiarity with authority work.  
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, responsible, reliable, detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work flexibly and independently. 
  • A commitment to the project for the summer at a minimum, for at least 8 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work at least part of the time on Fridays and attend training sessions.

This is a great opportunity for flexible, creative library school students to gain practical experience in a dynamic, urban academic library.

The Leonard Lief Library will accept interns for the Summer and Fall 2013 semesters.

Interns will work at the Reference Desk, plus on projects in one of the following areas, depending upon interest and qualifications: Website development, Subject Research Guides (LibGuides), Education Library resource development and promotion.

Interns will have an opportunity to observe Information Literacy classes and workshops taught by Lehman librarians.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Enrollment in the Internship course for credit at a Master’s program in library or information services.

Preferred: Completion of courses or experience in reference, database searching, website development, e-books, mobile databases. Strong computer skills highly desirable.

City College of New York: Division of Archives and Special Collections Summer Intern



                                                                                                                     
The Division of Archives and Special Collections of the City College of New York is seeking an intern for the July-August 2013 period.  This Division of the Morris R. Cohen Library established in 1960 has holdings which include collections documenting instruction, teaching, research and student life at the College through institutional records, publications, memorabilia, faculty papers, photographs, blueprints and media.  Biographical information is collected regarding distinguished alumni, including nine Nobel Laureates.  These materials actively serve the City College community and are of continuing interest to scholars studying the history and
sociology of higher education, as well as to biographers.  The City College of New York, founded in 1847, is the oldest campus of the  City University of New York.  

The assignment would be to process a collection of approximately 15 linear feet of paper-based material.  This would be for twenty hours a week over eight weeks during the summer, schedule to be arranged Monday through Thursday.  The internship could be either for course credit or paid at the rate of $12.00 per hour.

MoMA: Fall 2013 Internship


The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2013 Internship Program.      
Description:
The Fall 2013 Internship Program provides participants in-depth exposure to the workings of individual departments and practical and theoretical training in museum practices, and acquaints them with the role of museums in contemporary society. Working under the supervision of one of the Museum's professional staff, interns contribute to timely projects, gain insight into the functions of individual departments, and learn about the Museum's various collections, exhibitions, and programs for visitors.  Internship projects are based on Museum needs and requirements and are assigned to interns with the appropriate skills and interests.  This unpaid internship runs from September 10 through December 13, 2013.
Eligibility:
College students (One must have a minimum of two years of college completed by September 2013), recent graduates (both B.A. and M.A.), graduate students, and beginning museum professionals.  The Museum encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines to apply.  Fall internships require a minimum commitment of two full days per week, one of which must be Tuesday.

Gagosian Gallery: Summer 2013 Internship


Gagosian Gallery is looking for a current MLIS student to intern at its Madison Avenue location this summer. 

The intern will catalog books according to in-house standards, manage inventory, enter new materials into the database, maintain an orderly library and assist with special projects as needed.

Candidates should be organized, analytic, reliable, and able to work independently with little supervision. 

A background in contemporary art is desirable, though not required. 

Must be available 2-3 days a week. 

The internship is unpaid and may be taken for school credit.

BAM Archives: Summer 2013 Internship


The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is hiring an intern for the summer of 2013.

Waldorf Astoria Archive: Part Time Archival Intern


The Waldorf Astoria Archive collects and preserves materials that document the rich history of this world-famous hotel. The Archive seeks a part-time intern to manage both physical and digital collections to support The Waldorf Astoria brand – we anticipate 18-20 hours per week at a $12/hour rate of pay, with the work schedule being flexible within standard business hours. 

Responsibilities 
Preserving The Waldorf=Astoria’s history through the appraisal, processing, and digitization of organizational records, photographs, and various artifacts.
Developing physical and digital collections through donations from corporate clients, guests, and staff.
Implementing original online exhibitions, highlighting aspects of the collection, using the Archive’s Omeka-powered website www.waldorfarchive.org. 
Providing archival content to corporate communications, public relations, and sales & marketing departments to assist in the hotel’s marketing strategies.
Responding to a moderate volume of internal and external research requests.

Qualifications 
Enrollment in or recent completion of an advanced degree program in Archives or Library and Information Science.
Knowledge of archival theory, methodology, and best practices.
Demonstrated ability employing metadata standards, particularly Dublin Core.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
Some experience/comfort working with content management systems, with experience in web design and PHP a plus.
Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Omeka.
An interest in and knowledge of New York City history a plus.

WNET Thirteen: Archive Internship


Company Description
WNET, the parent company of public television stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21,  is a major producer of broadcast and online media for local, national and international audiences, creating award-winning content in the areas of arts and culture, news and public affairs, science and natural history, documentaries, and children’s programming.  WNET also has a rich media history as being the premiere educational television station in the New York City Metropolitan area. On September 16, 1962, New Dimensions in Television (WNDT) went on the air broadcasting on channel 13. Chartered in the states of New York and New Jersey, the very first broadcast was introduced by distinguished television journalist Edward R. Murrow. In 1970, local station WNDT merged with program producer and distributor National Educational Television (NET, PBS’ predecessor) to form WNET-TV, the call letters and station you know today.
Archive Description
The mission of the WNET Tape Archive/Library is to collect, preserve and make available production materials and programs that have either been produced or co-produced by WNET, from 1962 to the present, as well as programs produced by its former entities, NET and WNDT, both of which predate WNET and the creation of PBS.  Although the materials in the collection date back to the 1950s, the tape archive was not established in its current form until December 1998. 
 
Job Description:
This internship will allow a student or recent graduate the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in a media library/archive.  Projects might include such tasks as cataloging, researching, transcribing, creating metadata, scanning, and conducting reference services.
 
Internship Requirements:
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (proof of enrollment will be required).
Internships are unpaid.
Intern is expected to work 12-20 hours per week over the course of the Summer semester.
Scheduling is flexible during normal business hours.
Must be able to lift up to 35lbs.
Skills Preferred:
Preference will be given to students studying library and archival sciences, and especially to those pursuing moving image or media archive degrees. 
Students should have basic computer skills and a familiarity with Microsoft Office.

CUNY TV: Internship opportunity in audiovisual archiving and digital preservation

Based at the CUNY Graduate Center, CUNY TV is the largest public university television station in the U.S., producing and broadcasting programming on public affairs, education, science, business, and independent media. The archive at CUNY TV manages the near three-decade production history of the station, a broadcast library, the Himan Brown Radio Archive, and audiovisual collections produced within the City University of New York. CUNY TV's collections cover a variety of analog and digital audiovisual formats, including 1/4" reel audio, analog and digital video tape, and archival and broadcast digital formats. 

Interns participate in cataloging, collection management, and preservation activities within CUNY TV's collections. Current archival projects include collection inventory and assessment (including processing and re-housing collections), digitization of legacy formats for preservation, archival workflow documentation, cataloging with item-level and finding-aid description (using PBCore).

This internship would be appropriate for students pursuing the archives and preservation certificate and for those who are interested in digital preservation.  Preferably candidates should have experience with time-based media cataloging, audiovisual media handling,  digitization projects, and knowledge of metadata schemas (PBCore, Dublin Core). This internship is for credit only.
