Position: Spring 2016 Data and Policy Intern
 
Salary Range: This is an unpaid internship position; interns will receive school credit and a one-year NYCLU membership
 
Location: New York Civil Liberties Union, 125 Broad Street, New York, NY 10004

The New York Civil Liberties Union seeks current undergraduate or graduate students for spring 2016 internships.
 
About the NYCLU and the Advocacy Department
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation's foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Founded in 1951 as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, we are a nonpartisan organization with nine offices and nearly 55,000 members across the state.
 
The Advocacy Department influences public policy through a multi-disciplinary approach including grassroots organizing, lobbying elected officials, utilizing legal strategies, issuing policy reports, coalition building, and online activism. The Department is comprised of attorneys, organizers, social workers, and a data analyst. Our primary campaigns focus on police practices, criminal justice reform, school-to-prison-pipeline and students’ rights, and LGBT rights.
 
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Assist advocacy staff in strategizing and implementing campaigns to advance and defend civil liberties and civil rights
  • Assist advocacy staff with the input and analysis of data
  • Assist advocacy staff with policy document review and analysis
  • This position will have a particular emphasis on policing and criminal justice
 
Experience and Qualifications
  • Must have experience using Stata statistical analysis software
  • Must be comfortable using Microsoft Excel, intermediate to advanced skills preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of or interest in policing preferred
  • Must be in college or graduate school and able to receive credit for this internship
