Public Programs Assistant- Children
The Public Programs Lifelong Learning division seeks four enthusiastic M.L.I.S. student(s) from an ALA-accredited program to help operate, assist, manage and evaluate programs for adults, children, and teens in library locations throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, for 15 to 20 hours per week between January and June of 2011. Qualified interns will have the opportunity to partner with library staff on program management, learn about collaboration and partnerships, and help library users understand the educational uses of digital learning tools. This internship aims to familiarize the student with the concept of informal learning as it is realized through the lens of large urban library system. Students will have multiple mentoring opportunities with experienced library staff.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Children’s Programming Specialist, the Public Programs Lifelong Learning Intern will work with library staff and learn to:
Manage day-to-day programmatic operations twice per week at a library site
Assist with the implementation of KidsLIVE events
Communicate with library staff and outside programmers about best practices for youth programming
Research New York City neighborhood information for use in programming
Collaborate with program leaders to engage youth throughout the multi-session program
Assist Public Program Lifelong Learning staff in documenting and evaluating program progress
Participate in social media marketing for library programs
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Current enrollment in or recent graduate of an ALA-accredited Master's program in Library and Information Science
Interest in urban library services
Experience in library programming or youth activities preferred
Knowledge of or interest in working with youth in libraries preferred
