Internship Program

The Deloitte Services LP records management summer internship provides an introduction to records management.  Throughout the program, participants will gain exposure to the professional services industry and topics related to records management. 

Records Management

Technical and Professional Responsibilities:   

·          Gain knowledge of the processes to accurately identify and account for working papers in the records system
·          Gain an understanding of the process for fulfilling internal client requests for retrieval of client working papers on a timely basis, providing superior service at all times
·          Gain exposure to the process by which boxes are audited and inventoried
·          Use discretion to make decisions and will be required to do trouble-shooting and problem solving
·          Maintain high level of professionalism and ethical standards in communicating with client service professionals at all levels within the organization.

Personal and Practice Development:   
  • Take proactive career steps - set goals and career plans with advisor/career counselor   
  • Develop excellent professional oral and written communication skills

Qualifications:

EMC: Search & Data Management Internship


Search & Data Management Internship
EMC’s eServices organization is seeking a Search & Data Management intern to work as part of the User Experience team. This position will work directly with program management, content publishing, and operations teams to aid in curating enterprise-level user and product data and architecting EMC’s support search experience.   This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for an information science professional to creatively put theory into practice in the service of information consumers.
This is a full-time, temporary, paid position onsite at EMC’s global headquarters in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, during the summer of 2013.
Responsibilities include:
·         Implementing and maintaining enterprise terminology and taxonomies per established best practices
·         Maintenance of customer and partner user profile data
·         Gathering business requirements relating to search and indexing functionality
·         Collecting and analyzing metrics relating to search utilization and metadata  consumption
·         Analyzing data sets to identify inconsistencies
·         Supporting activities related to creation and stabilization of new search capabilities.
·         Supporting integration of search and metadata services with content repositories and web sites
·         Supporting activities related to user research and usability testing
Desired qualifications:
·         ALA-accredited Masters in Library and Information Science, or coursework pursued toward a Master’s degree in an ALA-accredited program
·         Demonstrated knowledge of controlled vocabularies, classification, subject analysis, information retrieval, and asset management
·         Familiarity with concepts of search engine-based retrieval, including indexing, precision/recall, relevancy
·         Proficiency with Microsoft office applications, especially Excel; familiarity with XML, SQL a plus
·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills
·         Ability to thrive in a fast-changing, deadline-driven corporate environment
·         Familiarity with the computer hardware and software industry a plus
·         Prior experience in the customer support arena a plus

The intern will assist the Library staff with various tasks including, but not limited to:

1.   Assist in retrospective book cataloging project as well as in cataloging new and incoming books.

Dance Division Prints and Designs Internship: Summer 2013
The Jerome Robbins Dance Division is seeking an intern interested in gaining professional experience with a large digitization and metadata project.  The successful candidate will participate in a project to digitize approximately 1,500 dance prints and 200 original designs spanning the 17th to 19th Centuries. The images will be published in the NYPL Digital Gallery.
This project will be the test case for automatic metadata ingest from the NYPL catalog into our custom Metadata Management System (MMS). The prints and designs will be digitized offsite at the Digital Imaging Unit of the New York Public Library. The intern will be supervised by the Assistant Curator of the Dance Division.

Timeframe:
120 hours over 12 weeks
Schedule: 10 hours per week (All interns must commit to schedule at least four hours on one day; otherwise hours are flexible). Working hours: Monday -   Friday: 10:00am - 6:00pm.This is an unpaid internship that may be used for credit toward a Master's Degree program.  Internships need not be taken for credit.   Selected applicants will be contacted after April 1 to schedule an interview.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Curator of the Dance Division, the intern will;
·         Be trained by a metadata specialist to use the MMS in order to Reconcile metadata between the Library catalog, the MMS, and the analog materials.
·         Research insurance values for individual prints and designs using art history and art auction databases.
·         Assist with registration shipping paperwork.
·         Carefully handle prints and artworks from the 17th through 19th centuries.
·         Assist with pulling and shelving materials.
·         Write project blog posts.
·         Gain practical experience with a custom content management system, metadata, copyright, and project management.
·         Attend departmental meetings to participate in project discussions and programmed events.
·         The intern may interact with researchers at the Special Collections desk.
·         Help develop a small reading room exhibit.
·         Learn the digitization process at NYPL by shadowing a staff member at the Digital Imaging Unit.

Qualifications:
·         Current enrollment in a Masters of Library Science or Museum Studies program.
·         This is a very detail oriented project, and the ideal candidate will possess excellent organizational skills and capability for handling extremely delicate materials.
·         Experience or interest in dance history, art history, museum studies, museum registration, or metadata preferred.

Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo) Archives Internship



Title:  Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo) Archives Internship 

The Project:  As part of a grant-funded project, the Wildlife Conservation Society Archives is developing a website to display digitized copies of early-twentieth-century scrapbooks.  Created by the Bronx Zoo’s first director, William T. Hornaday, these scrapbooks concern early wildlife conservation laws and activities.

The Internship (two positions available):  Reporting directly to the WCS Librarian & Archivist, the Archives Interns will be responsible for creating original descriptive metadata records for the digitized scrapbooks.

Qualifications:  Enrollment in (or recent completion of) a Master’s degree program in Library Science, with a focus on Archives, from an ALA-accredited institution.  Proven experience with Microsoft Excel.  Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.  Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 

Internships at the WCS Archives are a learning experience, but students who have experience with Dublin Core and with Omeka software are encouraged to apply.  An interest in early scrapbooks and/or the history of wildlife conservation is also useful.

A nominal stipend is offered.

Schedule: 12 weeks (scheduled between June 3-August 30, 2013), 10 hours a week, for a total of 120 hours.  Work must be scheduled within 9:00-5:00, Monday-Friday.
