The Medical Center Archives at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine is hiring one paid intern thelp preserve, arrange, and describe unique historical collections documenting the history of a premiere medical center and the second oldest hospital in the United States.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine:
The NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center originated from an affiliation agreement between The Society of the New York Hospital (chartered in 1771) and Cornell University Medical College (founded in 1898). The medical center first opened its doors in the fall of 1932.


Established in 1972, the Medical Center Archives preserves the records of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, as well as affiliated and predecessor institutions, and makes these materials available for use by students, faculty, staff, and the public. In addition to institutional records, the Archives holds approximately 300 collections of papers and manuscripts from noted associates. In total, the Archives contains more than 7,000 linear feet of papers, records, multimedia, and photographswhich represent a continuous chronicle of health care, scientific research, and medical education dating to 1771.

Description:
The Medical Center Archives Intern will gain experience in preserving, arranging, and describing historical collections according to archival standards and under the guidance of the Technical Services Archivist. The intern will also gain experience in related archival activities, including assisting in preservation rehousing for an early hospital collection and technical services database work.

Schedule and Salary:

Flexible part-time hours (20 hours per week) available Monday-Friday from 9:30-4:30 between September 2022 and May 2023, not to exceed 680 hours. The internship is paid hourly.


Qualifications:
The candidate must be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed an introduction tarchives course. The candidate must have experience working with historical materials and have knowledge of archival preservation, arrangement, and descriptive standards. Additionally, thcandidate must have experience with the Microsoft Office suite, be organized and able to work
independently on tasks, be flexible in changing situations, and be reliable and responsible.

The Vilcek Foundation will hire a part-time Archival Intern (3 days/week) for a 10-week program during weekdays from June 6 – August 12, 2022. The Archival Intern will support the foundation’s archive initiative and assist the foundation’s president and co-founders as needed. Interns will also complete a number of team projects in collaboration with other interns. The foundation is headquartered in New York City, and there are both in-person and hybrid remote/in-person opportunities available. Interns will only be paid for the hours they work, and are not paid for holidays, sick days and/or any time off including personal appointments.

The Archival Intern role is open to master’s graduates, current graduate students with strong academic records, or to individuals with equivalent course work and work experience at the rate of $25 per hour.

 

Job Responsibilities

The Archival Intern will provide creative and technical support to both the Archivist and the Associate Archivist and complete the below projects:

  • Scan historical registrar files that document the Vilcek Foundation Art Collection (40%);
  • Help arrange and rehouse hardcopy correspondence and ephemera that document the Vilcek Foundation’s prizes, grants, and exhibitions into acid-free folders and manuscript boxes for long-term preservation (40%);
  • Create an inventory list of books of the Vilcek Foundation’s holdings, ranging from books on general art references, books by past prizewinners, using the tool Libib (20%).

 

Work Requirements

Applicants must have the ability to work in the United States without visa sponsorship. Applicants must be able to work from a personal computer and sit for long periods of time in front of a computer screen. As employees of the foundation, interns must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

 

Skills Requirements

  • A limited New York City MTA metrocard, designated for work days in the office or field trips (containing at least $66 or 24 rides);
  • Gift of select exhibition catalogs and books published by the Vilcek Foundation;
  • A follow-up from a foundation staff member 1-year after the completion of your internship.

Library Intern, The Center for Fiction (Brooklyn)

The Center for Fiction, founded in 1820 as the Mercantile Library, is the only organization in the United States devoted solely to the vital art of fiction. The mission of The Center is to encourage people to read and value fiction and to support and celebrate its creation and enjoyment. In February 2019, we opened the doors to our new building in Downtown Brooklyn, creating a home for NYC’s literary community. Our library collection has been in existence since our founding and continues to be a thriving part of our nonprofit. We are a membership library with a collection of literary fiction, mystery and suspense novels, and nonfiction titles about fiction. Our library interns gain experience in many facets of library work and a glimpse into a nonprofit organization with a special collection. This is an internship for current MLS students only.

Reports directly to the Head Librarian and assists in the maintenance of the library’s collection. Tasks will include:

  • Catalog materials (both original and copy)
  • Perform circulation tasks including check out, check in, run library and patron reports, process holds
  • Assist in weeding of onsite collection, including evaluation of materials and research of authors
  • Communicate with Center for Fiction members regarding library matters
  • Perform reference and reader’s advisory (when Center reopens its member floor and library stacks)
  • Represent the Library at Book Buzz events throughout the year
  • Assist Head Librarian in reading group maintenance including minimal work on Zoom and Google sheets

SKILLS: Attention to detail, knowledge of and/or curiosity about special library collections, excellent verbal and written communication, able to juggle priorities, able to work independently on assigned tasks and work collaboratively with others, proficiency in Google apps, basic Zoom experience.

COMPENSATION: This is an unpaid internship but can be used for credit in an MLS degree program. Interns receive complimentary membership to the Center and discounts on writing workshops, reading groups and events.
