The Granger Collection (www.granger.com), a historical picture library in Manhattan, is seeking interns to assist with the management of its digital image collection. Interns would assist the metadata librarian in improving and refining the metadata and controlled vocabulary associated with the collection, reviewing image records for accuracy and consistency among metadata, and providing support to other departments when necessary. The position is ideal for a media-savvy student with an interest in metadata and cataloging, especially of non-print materials. 10hr/wk minimum, students currently enrolled in an MLS/MLIS ALA-accredited graduate program only. Can be used for course credit. Tuesdays and Fridays are preferred. About the SLA-NY Chapter Internship Program
Our internship program is sponsored and supported by our chapter members. It is designed to be as flexible as possible for both students and sponsors. For this reason we do not follow an academic calendar. We do ask that you become a student SLA member and commit at least 1 full business day per week to the internship. The more days per week you commit to the internship; the larger the pool of internship opportunities. Generally, host sites require that you be a currently matriculating graduate library school student.
The types of internships that our program offers vary greatly. We encourage you to express the types of internships you wish to explore. Below are just a few examples of our host sites:
- finance
- advertising
- market research
- law
- news / journalism
- publishing
- public relations
- nonprofit
Internship descriptions range from general reference, online research, to Intranet content indexing/management. In keeping with our flexibility directive, we believe that the student and the sponsor should clearly understand that along with some clerical-type duties, majority of the responsibilities of an intern is to learn new skill sets and add to their experience.
We ask that the sponsor supervises the intern with an ALA-accredited degreed librarian to ensure that the experience will be worthwhile and resume-building for the intern and provides the sponsor with professional quality work.
Most of our internships are located in Manhattan, but there have been exceptions. Generally our MLS students attend the following programs:
- Palmer SLIS, Long Island University - CW Post and Manhattan campuses
- Pratt Institute
- Queens College
- Rutgers University
- St. John's University
- University of Southern Connecticut.
