Museum of the City of New York: Archival Internships
Fall 2012
Internship Description:
The Museum of the City of New York is currently seeking library school students
interested in a Fall archives internship. Interns will work with both the
Museum’s Theater Collection or Manuscripts and Ephemera Collection and will
have the opportunity to gain experience in cataloging, handling fragile
objects, evaluating the condition of the object for conservation and
preservation, collection processing, and/or writing finding aids. Interns
may assist with reference inquiries and the Museum’s ongoing digitization
project, as needed. Projects will vary according to an individual’s skill set
and interests.
About the Collections:
Theater Collection
The Museum’s Theater Collections document theatrical activity in New York City from the late 18th century to the present day. The intern will assist in a variety of ongoing projects including assessments of prints and photographs in the Collection. Tasks include updating object records in the Museum’s collections management database and re-housing objects into archival folders and boxes. Material types include books, design renderings, posters, manuscripts, photographs, phonograph records, and ephemera.
Manuscripts and Ephemera Collection
These objects document the day-to-day life of New Yorkers over the last 300 years with the bulk of the materials dating to late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ephemera comprise a variety of formats, including print material such as menus, invitations, pamphlets, and handbills; textiles such as pennants, sashes, ties, and scarves; and three-dimensional artifacts such as badges, buttons, children’s identification tags, and promotional items. The manuscript collection includes papers of influential New Yorkers and their families. The subject of the material encompasses a wide scope of events and subjects pertaining to development of New York City.
Requirements:
Each internship requires a minimum commitment of two full days a week (7 hours), scheduled during the Monday - Friday workweek. Internships are unpaid. Preference will be given to students completing the internship for course credit. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Masters program for Library Science. Interns must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Students with a focus in Archival Studies and an interest in objects of material culture are encouraged to apply.

MTV Networks: Nickelodeon On-Air Operations Internship
Department Overview -
The broadcast operations team manages the delivery of Nickelodeon Kids and
Family Group on-air promos, commercials, and episodes while overseeing the
operations for all aspects of execution and fulfillment of on and off channel
content. This opportunity is perfect for candidates interested in learning
about the various departments the library supports within the Kids and Family
group. The Operations library intern will leave with an understanding of the
library, the promo delivery process from concept to completion and be
extensively exposed to the ongoing digital work flow expansion project.
Key Responsibilities -
Support the broadcast operations team, assist with collecting material for recycling or archiving of tapes to the main MTVN Concourse Library, digitizing various media, pulling paperwork, and fulfilling audio and video requests for all the Nickelodeon channels. Work with MTVN proprietary systems including OAP, NickPromoView, and AliasWeb as you familiarize yourself with a process that is transferable to all large broadcast companies. Assist with the verification of promos and other media for consistency and guideline adherence.

Anti-Defamation League: Archive Internship for the Fall Semester
The Library and Archives Department at the Anti-Defamation
League is looking for an energetic, creative MLS candidate for an internship in
archives management. Preference will be given to a candidate with an
interest and course work in archives. Meticulous attention to detail is a
job requirement. Projects will include: Archival searches for historic
ADL publications; digitization of ADL publications; expansion of the archival
database by converting handwritten information to electronic format; creation
of a digital photo archive.
This is a paid internship. We are seeking a candidate
who can start on or near September 4th. Hours and the end date
of the internship can be mutually agreed upon, with a desirable work week being
12-15 hours. ADL is located in mid-Manhattan.

New York Public Radio: ARCHIVES INTERN - FALL 2012
The NYPR Radio Archives currently maintains a collection of
more than 55,000 cataloged broadcast recordings dating from June 1927
to the present. These recordings cover the gamut of the station's activities as
one of the nation's earliest public broadcasters. They include live concerts
from venues around the metropolitan area, as well as public events and speeches
covering the full range of political, cultural, and civic activities in and
around New York City. Also included in the NYPR Archives are paper records,
photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, program guides, and scripts
(copies and originals) dating from 1924 to the present. The collection also
features vintage microphones and WPA commissioned artwork.
Since 1924, NYPR Radio has provided public radio listeners
with award-winning educational, cultural, news and public affairs programming
to the greater New York area and across the country. With more than one million
weekly listeners tuning in to NYPR, our core audience comes from all five
boroughs of New York City and beyond to at least 55 counties in three states.
This internship will provide an opportunity for a qualified
student to work with the Archives' staff on several ongoing digitization and
access projects. Over the course of the fall semester, the intern will
learn the analog-to-digital transfer process, work within the Archives' PBCore
database, and help create content for the Archives' website.
Internship responsibilities:
- Cataloging broadcast material, cleaning and replacing tapes
- Duplicating and quality controlling CDs
- Reformatting archival recordings
- Assisting Archives staff in organizing holdings in the vault
- Identifying orphan materials
Qualifications:
- Excellent writing skills
- Be familiar with public radio
- Have an interest in audio archives
- Have some familiarity with audio formats
- Have some familiarity with the PBCore metadata schema
- Have a good sense of 20th century history
- Must be enrolled in an accredited library school or archives program to earn course credit
- Must be consistently available for a minimum of 15 hours per week, between September 10th - December7th. (dates somewhat flexible)
- Must have a proven willingness to learn new skills
