P/T - Archives Processing Intern (2 positions) - Wildlife Conservation Society Archives (Bronx)

Reports To: Library & Archives Director
Duration:  Minimum of 13 weeks between September 8th and December 19th, 2014
Schedule:  Hours must be scheduled between Monday - Friday
Hours: 8 hours a week, scheduled between 9:00am – 5:00pm, for a total minimum of 104 hours

Summary 
The Wildlife Conservation Society Archives (located at the Bronx Zoo) is currently accepting applications for an Archival Processing Internship from graduate students preparing for careers in libraries, archives, or related cultural institutions.    

Under the guidance of the WCS Processing Archivist, the Archives Processing Intern will gain experience in various components of archival processing and description. While WCS Archives internships are unpaid, we are happy to work with academic institutions so that students can get academic credit for their internship.  Interns should be able to commit at least 104 hours to the internship. 

Objectives
Experience to be gained includes but is not limited to:
  • survey, arrange, and describe an archival collection
  • import data into an archival management system
  • create an EAD finding aid
  • document work with one or more posts for Wild Things, the WCS Archives Blog

Qualifications
  • enrollment in or recent completion of graduate program in library science, museum studies, or a related field
  • experience with archival collections and/or photographic materials is preferred

P/T - Knowledge Center Internship - Advertising Research Foundation (Manhattan)

ARF Interns are given a unique opportunity to work very closely with senior staff, something that is not possible in many organizations. Interns are able to hone their project management and organizational skills through a wide variety of tasks. All students will work on business projects suitable for a resume summary.

The Fall Internship Program will be a 10 week program, starting September 8, 2014 and concluding on December 12, 2014. The Knowledge Center Fall Intern will be asked to work 20 hours/week and will be compensated with a lunch stipend and Metrocard reimbursement.
Position
The ARF Knowledge Center provides a variety of research services to help our members make better business decisions. Our mission is to organize and curate ARF and industry knowledge and make it accessible and available to members. The Knowledge Center also provides assistance as needed to other departments in Membership, Marketing, Events and Research. This internship would be ideal for students pursuing a graduate level library science degree from an ALA accredited academic institution and who are interested in gaining real-life work experience in Special Libraries.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a MLIS Librarian, this individual will perform a wide variety of duties related to working in special library including:
Providing professional reference services for member and staff research requests, utilizing subscription databases and in-house resources.
Drafting event reports by attending forums and other industry presentations and documenting findings and key takeaways.
Assisting in organizing ARF’s historical archives. This includes maintaining an inventory of our archives, weeding materials, and locating ARF historical documents for scanning. 
Day-to-day tasks will vary depending on the volume of requests and the needs of the organization. 

Qualifications
The internship requires the following:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university - AND - current enrollment in a Master's of Library Science program accredited by American Library Association.
Experience in database and online researching.
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Proficiency in using computer, internet and other electronic resources.
Familiarity with the advertising, marketing and/or research industries preferable.

Job Description: Document Delivery Services and User Services
-          Primarily supports Document Delivery Services (DDS), performing a variety of tasks depending on client request volume and priorities. Tasks may include electronic request processing, scanning documents, and reshelving books or journals.
-          Acts as a User Services team member, providing consultation services at the Information Kiosks at either of the MSKCC Library locations, answering in-person directional questions, as well as queries received by email or phone. Escalates research questions and in-depth searches to the reference staff. Records client interactions.
-          Shares desk shift coverage responsibilities with other staff, which may include opening or closing one of the Library’s two locations. May sometimes be asked to cover the front desk independently during all-staff meetings or during part of an evening shift.
-          Assists and provides support regarding the online catalog (Tri-Cat), Library Web site, eResources and print collection.
-          As opportunities arise, may assist the Reference team with the development of library guides and training materials, bibliographies and current awareness searches, as well as completing special projects as assigned.

Required and Preferred Qualifications: Must be enrolled or in process of completing an MLIS program from an ALA accredited institution, demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, ability to work both independently and as part of a team, excellent oral and written communication skills, outgoing personality with a desire to provide excellent customer service, adaptable to a changing work environment and departmental priorities, and familiar with any or all of the following: electronic publishing, licensing, cataloging, metadata standards, link resolver technology, and database management skills.

Experience with WorldCat, integrated library systems (particularly Innovative Millennium), link resolver technology, copy cataloging using OCLC Connexion, document delivery using ILLiad and Ariel, as well as proficiency searching databases a plus.

Hours:  To be determined based on student schedule and staffing needs. 12-15 hours a week. Possible weekend hours. Some evening availability is necessary.

Pay: Hourly rate is very competitive and based on relevant experience and qualifications.

Cataloging Intern, Guggenheim Mus Lib (NY)

Fall 2014 Cataloging Internship
 
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Library seeks a graduate student for an unpaid internship opportunity in cataloging.
 
This semester, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Library will be offering one (1) current MLS student or recent graduate an opportunity to gain experience in cataloging and a greater understanding to the multi-faceted workings of a small museum library.

Responsibilities:
 
·         Perform general library maintenance, including book processing, shelving cataloged materials, and retrieving library materials from the stacks in response to reference requests from staff, volunteers or other interns.
·         Copy cataloging, which includes searching, editing, and importing MARC records into the library catalog.
·         Assist in the cataloging of the library’s backlog of new and older uncataloged materials.

For experienced applicants, we offer an opportunity to focus the internship on advanced cataloging practices.

Responsibilities:
·         Assist in creating/editing bibliographic records for rare or unique books in our special collections.
·         Create original cataloging records for older uncataloged materials.
·         Identify items that will need repair or preservation.
 
Requirements:
·         Course work in original and copy cataloging required. Experience in original and/or copy cataloging preferred.
·         Knowledge of Library of Congress classification, subject headings, and authorities.
·         Familiarity with AACR2, RDA and current cataloging practices.
·         Knowledge of modern and contemporary art.
·         Ability to take direction and to work independently.
Established in 1959 with the opening of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Library contains published resources that reflect and inform museum collections and exhibitions. The Library's mission is to support research endeavors. The collection consists of literature focused on modern and contemporary art, architecture, and design, with emphasis on the museum's international collections and exhibitions. Materials are collected in English and Western-European languages with limited selections made among other languages. Collection development methods include purchase, exchanges, gifts, and acquisitions of both newly-published and out-of-print materials.

Overview:

The Center for Marketing Intelligence is looking for a Library Assistant Intern. This would be a great learning opportunity for someone with administrative experience that is interested in the more research-oriented side of information work.



Overview:

This position handles all periodical and library-related subscriptions, coordinates research-related contracts, and resolves billing issues. The Library Assistant will provide administrative support to the department head and serve as the department point-person for receipt of vendor invoices, time off recordkeeping, the department calendar and reception duty as required. This is a paid position with growth potential.

 

Responsibilities:

·  Order, check-in, route, and maintain periodical (paper and online) subscriptions and passwords. Troubleshoot missing issues and other problems, working with subscription agent and directly with publishers. (Learning objective: most libraries/information centers perform this activity so it is important to learn as the candidate might do it or supervise it during his or her career)

·  Co-ordinate ordering and payment for books, reports, association memberships, etc. (Learning objective: like above, this is a typical library/information center function)

·  Co-ordinate organization wide, research-related contracts (e.g., Lexis Nexis):

·  prepare pre-approval forms for user participation

·  reconcile billing issues

·  maintain subscription files

·  monthly accrual report

·  (Learning objective: Working with vendors & contracts has become an important library/information center function: candidate will probably use this experience later in career)

·  Process department vendor invoices (Learning objective: typical library/information center work)

·  General administrative support, including monitoring dept. calendar & time-off records, maintaining phone lists and organization charts

·  Ordering office supplies and maintaining CMI’s supply area

·  Work with Growth Services Team on internal databases as time permits (Learning objective: databases have become an important function in most libraries/information centers)

·  Light research work (online and Web-based information search) as time permits (Learning objective: this is the #1 skill a future librarian/information professional needs)

Qualifications:

·  1 - 2 years administrative experience in a corporate environment desirable

·  Excellent Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel & PowerPoint

·  Strong facility with numbers

·  Strong organizational and detail skills

·  Enrolled in an MLS program (preferably in early stages)
