UNPAID INTERN / RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION
The
Department of Printed Books & Bindings at the Morgan Library &
Museum seeks an organized, diligent, and engaged candidate to serve as a
part-time unpaid research assistant or
intern for a 2017-2018 publication entitled Delirium: The Art of the Symbolist Book. The
catalog will document the Morgan’s holdings of printed books, music,
manuscripts, and drawings related to the Symbolist movement of the 1880s
and 1890s. The position
reports to the curator in charge of the book and current exhibition,
also entitled Delirium.
Responsibilities may include:
-Researching, compiling, and formatting a
checklist of relevant items in the collection based on the Morgan’s
online catalog and related print publications.
-Compiling entries for a bibliography, and verifying quotations and citations in the text.
-Assembling and formatting image captions for the text and catalog portion of the book.
Job requirements:
-The ideal candidate will have excellent
research skills and be able to work independently; experience working
with rare books and an understanding of bibliographic descriptions of
books and bindings; reading knowledge or fluency
in French; and a basic knowledge of 19th-century French literature.
-They must be able to work primarily offsite, with access to online resources and Microsoft Word and Excel.
The
assistant is expected to work at least 10 hours a week, or more, at the
student’s discretion. During the course of the project, they can set
their own hours for work performed
remotely; occasional onsite work will be scheduled at the student's
convenience. There may be an opportunity to extend the project beyond
the spring semester.
