General description:
Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) offers internships at its International
Office in New York City. RILM publishes RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (along with a suite
of other resources), which is widely recognized as the world’s premiere abstracted bibliography
on music and related disciplines. RILM was established in 1966 and operates under the joint
sponsorship of the of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and
Documentation Centres (IAML); International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM); the
International Musicological Society (IMS), and the International Society for Popular Music
(IASPM).
 
Internships at RILM offer unique opportunities to learn about all aspects of our operation, while
contributing extensively to our distribution of the world’s writings on music. Intern projects are
designed to benefit both the institution and complement the intern's own interests, skills, and
experience.
 
Interns at RILM have gone on to enjoy successful careers as music librarians, professors, and
other professions. Beyond the academy, an internship at RILM provides valuable and practical
technological and research skills that are transferable across a wide range of sought-after jobs.
 
Intern duties:
Locate descriptive metadata for differentiated authorities (persons, organizations, works,
geographical locations, etc.)
Add descriptive metadata for differentiated authorities
Differentiate authorities where needed
Add links to searchable variants
Validate entities based on established authorities
 
Learning objectives:
Understanding of the functions of descriptive metadata (validation, finding, linking)
Understanding of RILM’s authority structure and the role of descriptive metadata
therein
Demonstrate judgment in the choice and application of metadata for authorities
Demonstrate ability to collaborate as a member of the metadata team
 
Pre-requisites:
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level program related to Information
and/or Library Science
Specialization and/or focus in metadata, library systems, digital libraries, digital
collections, or digital curation
Experience with Excel, databases, and/or MARC
Enthusiasm for library and digital repository metadata
Interest in music
 
Time commitment:
Dates and times are flexible and can be structured according to the intern's needs, but should
cover a period of a minimum of 120 hours.
 
All RILM internships are unpaid, and housing is not provided. College credit may be granted but
must be coordinated in advance with the intern’s university/college.
