Internship Descriptions

The New-York Historical Society seeks an intern for the fall 2015 semester to gain
hands-on processing experience and academic credit working with the organization’s

institutional archive. New-York Historical currently holds approximately 1,600 linear



feet of institutional archives, recording the Society's history from its founding in 1804 to

the present. These records document institution-wide activities such as collecting,
 
exhibitions, public programs and research that have formed the backbone of the Society’s
 
work throughout its history. Arranging and describing these records is currently the

subject of a 2-year grant-funded project.

The Archival Intern will work under the supervision of the Project Archivist to process
 

completely a record group or other significant portion of the archive. The internship


emphasizes archival description for paper, textual documents. Description will involve

writing administrative history, scope, arrangement, and other notes for the records;

identifying significant content in the archival material; documenting the records in the

collection management system, Archivists’ Toolkit (AT); generating a complete DACScompliant


finding aid using AT; and establishing name and subject access terms with

controlled vocabularies. The internship will also involve some physical processing,

including arrangement of the records and basic conservation practices.

An internship is available for an intern to process one or more manuscript or


photograph archival collection(s) held in the N-YHS library. Interns will develop the

skills necessary to fully process archival collections, including: arrange and describe

materials, re-house materials into acid-free folders and boxes, and create finding aids for

collections. Interns will have the opportunity to work with Archivist Toolkit to produce

DACS-compliant electronic finding aids. Applicants should have a demonstrated

background and/or interest in history.

F/T Temp - Medical Library Internship - Hospital for Special Surgery (


The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a motivated Library/ Information Science student with an interest in Medical (Hospital) libraries to assist the Medical Librarian and the Archivist to manage HSS Archives digital assess. Duties include creating and managing metadata, importing and managing digital objects in PastPerfect, and creating web presence for the HSS Archives. In addition the library intern is to assist the library’s daily operation and will be responsible for the library’s interlibrary loan service.

 

Duties:

This internship opportunity is focused on the special project of digital asset management of HSS Medical Archives digital objects, as well as developing a resource guide, how to guides, and designing web page for the HSS Archives.

 

The library’s daily operation incudes:

          Assist in interlibrary loan and document delivery (NLMs Docline)

Assist HSS residents/fellows/staff in use of library resources

          -Including PubMed, Ovid, MDConsult, and RefWorks

Assist providing library orientations

 

Desired Qualifications:

The opportunity is available to any Library Science student with an interest in medical libraries, but special consideration will be given to candidates with the following:

-Completion of coursework in Health Sciences Resources.

-Experience with Content Management Systems and/or web design.

-Interests in copyright, scientific and academic publishing

-Previous library experience.

-Strong communication skills.

 

Compensation:

The internship position is being offered with a stipend amount of $20/day.

 

Hours:

The candidate would need to be able to commit a minimum of 8 hours a week (2 days at 4 hours per day e.g.) to this position for a minimum of 6 weeks. The schedule is somewhat flexible, but would need to be Monday through Friday daytime hours.

The Rye Free Reading Room in Rye, NY is seeking a qualified graduate student for an exciting internship position during summer 2015. The library is currently accepting applications for an internship in the Children’s Services Department. The intern will have the chance to gain a wide range of experiences in a busy public library while serving the pre-K through grade 5 population. The intern will work closely with the Children’s Services Manager assisting with tasks including but not limited to: reference services, readers advisory, community and media outreach, and assisting with the implementation and supervision of the library’s many children’s programs, and summer reading program registration.

Metadata and Digital Preservation Internship at Bronx Community College Archives

The Bronx Community College Archives seeks applications for a part-time, unpaid intern to work with digital preservation for its collections beginning in Summer 2015. The archival collection includes records  related to the Hall of Fame national landmark on campus, as well as a vast collection of yearbooks and the student newspaper, The Communicator. The Archives is also underway in creating an oral history collection of video interviews of BCC alumni, faculty and staff documenting the history of the University Heights campus.
The intern will report to the Archivist of the BCC Archives & Special Collections, a unit of Library.
Responsibilities will include:

  *  Assist in the development of a robust architecture for storing and preserving digital video and image files at the highest quality possible.
  *  Assist with the creation of metadata schema for digital archiving of video and image assets.
  *  Write reports and work instructions to support the advancement of preserving digital video and image files.
  *  Analyze stored assets and file integrity of stored data.
  *  Develop methods and systems to streamline the workflow for digital preservation.
  *  Research new technologies for the preservation of digital video and image files.
  *  Performing other related duties as assigned.

Prospective intern should be currently enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate program and have a keen interest in video production workflows, image processing, file metadata, digital storage systems and data integrity measurement techniques. Knowledge of PBcore is desired.
Internship requires a minimum commitment of 2 days per week. Can provide academic credit.

P/T - Photo Archive Internship (Digital Project) - Museum of the City of New York (East Harlem)


The Museum of the City of New York seeks a graduate student intern to work on a project for the Photo Archive. Interns will work alongside the Cataloging Coordinator in the Museum’s digital lab. Tasks include, but are not limited to, identifying discrepancies between catalog records in the Museum’s database and online collections portal; editing legacy data in catalog records; creating new catalog records as necessary; recording physical metadata such as dimensions and locations; and re-housing photographs. Interns will become familiar with the Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) data content standard, gain experience in object handling, and obtain first-hand knowledge of cataloging in a collections management system and digital asset management system.

Appropriate candidates will be currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Information and Library Science. Preferred skills and qualifications include previous coursework working with cultural objects; familiarity with CCO data content standard; knowledge or demonstrated interest in New York City history; understanding of photographic processes and formats; exposure to collections management systems such as ARGUS, PastPerfect, or TMS; and experience handling fragile objects.

The Internship requires a minimum commitment of one full day a week (7 hours), scheduled during the Monday - Friday workweek June 1 – August 28, although two days a week is preferred. Internships are unpaid. Preference will be given to students completing the internship for course credit.

DESCRIPTION: The Library and Digital Archive work-scholar assists in organization and circulation activities for Aperture Foundation’s in-house Library and also supports digital archives projects related to the development of file hierarchy systems and information structures. Responsibilities include: responding to borrowing requests; acquiring and integrating newly released Aperture Foundation titles into Library storage; maintaining and updating Library collection inventories and bibliographic office reference guides; design and construction of protective sleeves for the Master archival set of Aperture Foundation titles; assisting in the organization of submissions for the annual PhotoBook Awards; and assisting staff in the preparation and transfer of materials to archives storage at the Millerton facility.
