P/T - Student Database Coordinators (2 positions) - 92nd Street Y (Manhattan)

 92nd Street Y (www.92Y.org) is a world-class cultural and community center where

people all over the world connect through culture, arts, entertainment and conversation.

For over 140 years, 92Y has harnessed the power of arts and ideas to enrich, enlighten,

and change lives, and the power of community to repair the world.

About the Position

As part of its mandate to preserve 92Y’s institutional history, the 92Y Archives maintains

an internal Event History Database chronicling 92Y’s celebrated history as a presenter of

musical, literary, dance, and lecture programming of the highest caliber. As the primary

internal resource for discovering information on past events, the Event History Database

is a vital tool regularly referenced by departments across the organization.

The 92Y Archives is seeking 1-2 library and information science graduate students for

the summer 2015 to serve as Database Coordinators and assist Archives staff in

managing and making improvements to the Event History Database.

Under the supervision of 92Y’s Senior Archivist, Student Database Coordinators will

engage in the following activities:

· Keeping the Event History Database up-to-date by creating database records for

current and upcoming events

· Reviewing database records for previous seasons and updating event records

with additional metadata where appropriate

· Scanning backlogged event documentation, such as performer contracts and

permission releases, and entering the digital files into corresponding event

records

· Maintaining Microsoft Excel spreadsheets containing additional metadata

augmenting current database records, for future incorporation into the Event

History Database

· Conducting research and making recommendations in connection with three

major upcoming projects:

o Metadata cleanup - Revising the current event record model to

incorporate recognized metadata standards into the database

o Integrating the database with a collection management system

o Making the database publicly accessible on the 92Y website

This position is available as a not-for-credit volunteer opportunity; however, it may be

possible for the position to also qualify as a for-credit internship. For interested students

seeking a formal internship for academic credit, 92Y Archives staff will be happy to work

with you to see if the position can be modified to fulfill internship requirements.
