Municipal Library Internship
Summer Internship 2023
The Municipal Library, a division of the New York City Department of Records and Information Services, offers an educational (unpaid) internship to a library school student. This internship can be for credit but that is not required. The Municipal Library is the official depository for digital and print publications of New York City agencies. The collection includes varied material and resources on New York City history, life, and culture. This will be an in-person work experience.
Cataloging and Collection Management
Learn original and copy cataloging using the Koha system with MARC 21 interface
Work on organizing and cataloging a collection of over 100 publications on CD-ROMs
Correct and clean up cataloging records that have no dates of publication
Deaccession materials that are being weeded from collection
Shelving and shelf maintenance
Identify and help manage conservation of materials that need repair
Digital Asset Management
Create workplan for maintenance of current digital asset management system
Assist with integration of metadata from the Government Publications Portal into electronic library catalog
Assist staff with adding legacy digital files to the GPP
Work with Library staff on monitoring and tracking submission of New York City agency publications in digital formats
Reference
Help with in-person, e-mail, and telephone reference requests
Assist on various reference projects and using the resources in the Library collection
Qualifications/ Special Skills/Areas of study
Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel
Highly motivated
Strong attention to detail
Preferably should have completed basic coursework in library and information science, especially cataloging and/or metadata
