Archive Internship, NYC Health+Hospitals (Manhattan)

NEW YORK CITY HEALTH + HOSPITALS ARCHIVE INTERNSHIP

New York City Health + Hospitals is the nation's preeminent public health system. Including its antecedent forms, it has served the City for almost 300 years. The Fund for Health + Hospitals has initiated a Heritage Project to identify, gather, and organize into an archive materials related to the public hospital system serving New York City. This repository will trace the individual development and contributions of each facility and ensure ongoing visibility of their many contributions to public health.

Job Description:  Working under the supervision of the Heritage Project Director, interns will be assigned one or more hospital collections as a focused project. Duties will include:

Surveying and processing the historic materials of each public hospital
Using an electronic database to catalog artifacts, photographs, documents, books,
audio/visual recordings and other collection items
Researching history and provenance of artifacts via traditional means as well as electronic search methods
Preparing a finding aid according to national standards for DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard) and EAD (Encoded Archival Description).

Qualifications:  Current graduate students or recent graduates from an accredited Library and/or Information Science program with a strong interest and relevant experience in archives and museum studies are encouraged to apply.  
Desirable Qualifications:
*Extremely organized and detail-oriented. 
*Knowledge of issues regarding preservation, conservation, and archive/collection development.

Position Duration:  Project will continue through 2017. Spring internship session begins in February 2017 and end in May 2017.  Interns will be expected to work during normal business hours (typically Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm) at no less than 10 hours per week.

Paid Summer Internship for Graduate Student - The Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Join a vibrant community of students at The Met this summer!  The Museum Seminar (MuSe) Internship Program awards paid summer and long-term internships to students interested in a career in the arts and fields related to the Met’s many departments. In addition to developing skills through internship projects within museum departments, interns participate in a weekly seminar series and interact directly with the Museum's visitors by leading public tours in the galleries.
The Met strongly encourages applications from students who are members of groups underrepresented in careers related to museums and the visual arts.

The Thomas J. Watson Library is the primary research library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It has a collection of nearly one million volumes, extensive electronic resources and growing digital collections.  For further information regarding The Thomas J. Potential projects in Watson Library include:

·         Working on stacks management for expanding our special collections; evaluating and processing research materials for relocation to offsite storage
·         Evaluating and researching folios in our circulating collection for scarcity and condition, for possible inclusion in our special collections
·         Examining and creating a workflow for enhancing our legacy artist files
·         Taking part in cutting-edge technical services workflows, working in OCLC Connexion Client and Innovative Interfaces new Sierra platform, which the library will be adopting this spring
·         Cataloging a significant gift of contemporary art exhibition catalogs from the Museum of Modern Art
·         Evaluating serials subscriptions for renewal
·         Exposure to other areas of library work whenever possible, according to interest and aptitude
Internship dates: 
June 5–August 11, 2017
Full time: five days, thirty-five hours per week

UX Content Strategy Intern, Google (Manhattan)

We’re excited to announce our first UX Content Strategy internship program. We’re looking for a user-experience writer (UX writer) intern who has a knack for writing in simple, friendly language and an eye for creating cohesive content experiences across Google products. The internships are located at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, CA, and at Google’s office in Manhattan.

What we do:
Content strategists plan, create, deliver, and manage content as an integral part of the product design process. “Content” can include text, voice, data, images, and videos. As a speciality within this discipline, UX writers develop on-task, on-brand language and guidelines for Google products.

Sample activities for the UX writer intern:
  • Contribute to a product's content strategy, thinking holistically about how the content pieces fit together to create a cohesive whole
  • Document the localization process for a product
  • Update a design or product style guide to incorporate new content requirements
  • Develop UI text and notifications for a new feature or experience
  • Develop a test plan for text/content and publish findings for fellow Googlers

You’ll shape product experiences by creating useful, meaningful text that helps users complete the task at hand. You must be a stellar writer. You’ll pursue a deep understanding of your products, including participating in research studies. You’ll provide content recommendations that include the right words and, sometimes, complementary data and images.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with designers, researchers, prototypers, product managers, and engineers to define requirements
  • Write clear, concise user-interface text (UI text) for products
  • Evaluate product experiences through audits and other supplementary research techniques
  • Establish language recommendations and document standards in style guides

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a BA/BS or MS degree program and graduating in winter 2017, 2018, or 2019
  • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and returning to the program after completion of the internship

Brooklyn Public Library seeks an intern to work with the Youth and Family Services Department in coordinating the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition.

This is a grant-funded position beginning February 1 and ending May 26, 2017.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  *  Assisting with the Ezra Jack Keats bookmaking competition judging on Monday, February 6, 2017
  *  Assisting our programs and exhibitions department in mounting an exhibit of winning books
  *  Compiling booklists and writing annotations and summaries of winning books
  *  Scheduling and hosting class visits to view an exhibit in May of the winning books
  *  Coordinating the celebration that takes place on the afternoon of May 19, 2017

Skills and Qualifications:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Archives holdings are primarily textual documents related to the Met's institutional history, collection, and past exhibitions, dating from 1870 through the twentieth century. The intern's responsibilities will include archival processing of Museum records, reference assistance to Museum staff and non-staff scholars, and historical research. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), founded in 1914, is the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian organization. Its archives document more than a century of JDC’s global humanitarian efforts and stand as one of the most important repositories in the world for the study of modern Jewish history. 
Project:
The JDC Archives offers an internship opportunity in its records management initiative at its global headquarters in New York.
This internship will introduce the candidate to basic records management and archival principles and practices, including the life cycle of JDC’s institutional records, and involve them in all aspects of building out records management policies and procedures.
Responsibilities include working with JDC staff to review and update the record retention schedules for JDC’s New York headquarters and collaborating with the Archives to develop effective practices to train global JDC personnel in implementation procedures.

Spring 2017 JDC Archives Processing Opportunity

The JDC Archives is the institutional repository of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization since its founding in 1914. Holding over 3 miles of records documenting JDC’s global rescue, relief, and renewal work in over 90 countries during the past century, the JDC Archives is one of the world’s most significant collections for the study of modern Jewish history.

We seek students who are interested in gaining archival processing experience. The broad geographic and programmatic scope of our institutional records allows us to tailor projects to different interests.

Projects:

  • Arrange, rehouse, and describe unprocessed records of JDC’s activities around the world, including Israel, the Soviet Union, Tunisia, and Yugoslavia, from the past three decades

  • Prepare collections for off-site storage
  • Database cleanup, such as deleting duplicate records and conducting quality control on file names and subject terms
  • Contribute to collections management procedures and documentation
  • Other special projects as they arise

Qualifications:

Proficiency in Word and Excel required. Familiarity with database procedures is recommended. Candidate must have completed at least one semester of coursework in archives or library science.  Interest in Jewish history preferred.

Museum of the City of New York - Theater Collection

The Museum of the City of New York seeks graduate student interns to work on various Theater Collection projects currently underway including object cataloging, re-housing, and digitization.  Interns will work alongside one part-time project employee and the Museum's Theater Archivist. Tasks include, but are not limited to conducting condition assessments, recording physical metadata such as dimensions and locations, and re-housing objects. Interns will become familiar with the Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) data content standard, gain experience in object handling, and investigate the unique challenges of describing archival collections in a museum setting.



Appropriate candidates will be currently enrolled in Master's program in Information and Library Science, with at least some coursework in archival studies. Preferred skills and qualifications include previous coursework working with cultural objects; familiarity to CCO data content standard; knowledge or demonstrated interest in theater history; exposure to collections management systems such as MusuemPlus, PastPerfect, or TMS; and experience handling fragile objects.



The Internship requires a minimum commitment of one full day a week (6.5 hours), scheduled during the Monday - Friday workweek for the duration of a semester, though two days a week is preferred.  Internships are unpaid. Preference will be given to students completing the internship for course credit.

The Lesbian Herstory Archives  (located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC) is looking for graduate and undergraduate students  with a demonstrated interest in Lesbian Studies, Women's History  and Lesbian Activism currently enrolled in a library science, information science or  archives studies program.
We have a number of exciting projects for the upcoming academic year working with video and audio collection cataloging, digitization and preservation, metadata management, processing special collections and cataloging books and periodicals.  There will also be the opportunity to plan exhibits or events and to attend workshops and classes.   Interns will get to meet professionals in a wide variety of analogous fields and have many networking opportunities including site visits and guest lecturers.     All internships at LHA are unpaid.  

WHAT TO EXPECT

·         Interns will have the opportunity for practical application of archives and library skills.

·         Course credit and letters of recommendation or references will be provided where applicable.

·         Interns will also receive the opportunity  to participate in related  activities outside of  LHA

·         Interns will be supervised by professional librarians and other archives staff who specialize in the fields of photography, archival practices, library science graphic design and non-profit management.


REQUIREMENTS

·         A demonstrated interest in Lesbian Studies, Women’s History and Feminism

·         Available for a minimum of 16 hours per week (2 full week days). You must also be available for weekly meetings on Monday nights.


PREFERENCES

·         Completion of core library school courses or at least  1 full semester of library school. 

·         Experience working in a Library, Archive , Museum or Historical Society environment.

In operation since 1974, The Lesbian Herstory Archives is home to the world's oldest and largest collection of archival, bibliographic and multimedia materials by and about the diverse lesbian experience.
LHA is, and has always been, an all-volunteer run, 501(c)3 , non-profit educational organization with no paid staff and no government support.   We rely upon individual donations and private foundation support.

We offer research assistance to academics, artists, filmmakers authors, individuals and classes. User Experience Intern, NYU (Manhattan)

User Experience Intern
 
NYU Health Sciences Library seeks a User Experience Intern to assist in the redesign of the
Librarys website. The User Experience Intern will gather data and perform analyses on the
site’s current usage as well as work with real users to understand their goals and behaviors in
order to improve the overall online experience of using the Library.
 
The NYU Health Sciences Library is a digital library supporting the diverse and sophisticated
needs of a comprehensive academic medical center. The Library’s website aims to enhance the
discoverability of the Librarys information resources as well as promote the services offered by
the Library, including a brand new library facility. The User Experience Intern will gain
experience employing the most common exercises as well as contemporary software to improve
website usability and will have the opportunity to work with a variety of website users, including
students, teaching faculty, physicians, nurses, librarians, and research scientists.
 
This internship is being offered for the spring 2017 semester. Interns are expected to dedicate
~120 hours over the course of the semester with the majority of the work being completed
onsite during regular business hours. The internship is unpaid and must be completed to earn
academic credit.
 
The User Experience Intern will work on a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
 
Performing a content inventory of the existing NYU Health Sciences Library website
Conducting card sorting exercises with NYU Langone Medical Center users
Analyzing data available through Google Analytics, heatmaps, and search logs
Creating wireframes using Balsamiq software
Conducting wireframe usability testing with NYU Langone Medical Center users
Proposing recommendations to improve the site’s usability and information architecture
Required qualifications:
Enrollment in an academic graduate degree program
Prior coursework in website usability/user experience
Familiarity with common practices in website usability, such as creating content
inventories, card sorting, developing wireframes, and usability testing
Ability to work independently and in teams to produce outstanding results
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to complete work during regular business hours (scheduling flexible)
