The New York City Transit Museum Archives seeks one unpaid archive intern for the 2014 Summer Semester.

The New York Transit Museum Archives is the official repository for New York City Transit Authority administrative records of enduring historical value; historical documents are also acquired from outside sources. The New York Transit Museum Archives collects historical documents and works of art on paper relating to New York City mass transit from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. These records and documents include photographs, moving image materials, maps, posters, engineering drawings, books and serial publications, reports, proposals, records of legal proceedings, correspondence, and other materials. The archives preserves and catalogs these materials and makes them available to researchers from the public, from the New York Transit Museum, and from within the NYCTA and other Metropolitan Transportation Authority agencies. The archives provide reference services by telephone and mail, conducts research, supports all Museum staff functions (exhibitions, programs, development, retail operations, outreach) and initiates publications that provide historical information to the public.

Primary job responsibilities
Assist in the processing of incoming collections of historical records including maps, posters, photographs and the inventory of library materials; catalog collection and series level records for incoming donations in the archives PastPerfect Collection Management database; create paper based collection descriptions and finding aids for record series’ in the archive; scan images for image management database.

Qualifications and experience
Students in archives management, library and information science, records management, museum studies, conservation/preservation administration, history, photography, urban studies, historic preservation, and engineering programs who have had coursework or experience in archives management, cataloging and classification, preservation administration, indexing and abstracting and/or historical research methods are encouraged to apply. A minimum commitment of one day a week is required.

P/T - Museum Collection Internship - Coney Island USA (Brooklyn)

Coney Island USA (CIUSA) is an IRS 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation founded in 1980 by Costa Mantis, Jane Savitt-Tennen and Dick D. Zigun. CIUSA has developed and produces a number of different programs including some of New York City’s best loved summer programming, such as the Mermaid Parade and the Coney Island Circus Sideshow. Coney Island USA also operates the Coney Island Museum and produces Ask the Experts, Burlesque at the Beach, Congress of Curious Peoples, Coney Island Film Society, Coney Island Film Festival, the Coney Island Tattoo and Motorcycle Festival, Creepshow at the Freakshow, Magic at Coney!!! and the Coney Island Sideshow School.

CIUSA is offering a variety of unpaid internships this summer.  Interns are required to make a minimum time commitment of one full day per week. Course credit may be arranged for all internships.

Coney Island Museum Collection Internship
The Coney Island Museum seeks two interns to assist in researching, cleaning, re-housing, cataloging, as well as scanning and/or photographing new material that come into the museum’s collection. This is an ideal internship for a student of library science or museum studies who wants to gain real-world experience with the internal workings of a small museum collection.

The Museum’s collection of approximately 6,000 artifacts consists primarily of:

  • Attraction artifacts (game and ride components, furnishings, props)
  • Costume
  • Identifying artifacts (medals, tickets, coupons, tokens)
  • Information artifacts (banners, cards, posters, signs)
  • Photographic materials
  • Published materials (books, sheet music, sound recordings)
  • Records (correspondence, diaries, financial records)
  • Souvenirs (postcards and assorted ephemera)

Interns should have a museum, library, or archival background or should be actively pursuing graduate studies in one of these areas. The intern should also have a familiarity with Coney Island, knowledge of proper museum artifact handling, minor preservation treatment, cataloging standards, and Photoshop.

Summer Library and Archives Internship

The CCS Bard Library and Archives is offering one summer internship for current MLS students interested in contemporary art, with a focus on both library and archives work.

The intern will be responsible for creating a collection-level finding aid for the Hessel Museum Artist Files, featuring documentation and ephemera for artists featured in the Hessel Collection. The project will include creating archival description, name authority research and publishing a collection-level record in the integrated library system and in WorldCat. The intern will work primarily with Archivists’ Toolkit, with some exposure to OCLC Connexion and Innovative’s Millennium ILS.   The project may involve some archival rehousing and reformatting of fragile paper-based materials. The ability to work in both Mac and PC environments is required. Familiarity with basic archival practices and Library of Congress authorities is a plus.

The internship requires a commitment of 100 hours over the summer, with some flexibility in schedule. The CCS Bard Library is open from 10am-5pm Monday through Friday during summer intersession. This is an unpaid internship and no housing is provided.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission is the New York City agency that is responsible for designating and regulating the city's landmarks and historic districts. These properties have special historic, architectural, cultural, and/or aesthetic significance as part of the heritage of the city, state or nation. 

Description: The research department historic district summer intern will take on special projects related to a proposed historic district. Tasks will include the compilation of architectural appendices, research of historic photos, creation of research files, scanning of tax photos, building, map, image, people and institutions research at various archives, and other general administrative duties. 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented with good communication skills, will have strong interest in architectural, cultural, social and New York City history, have relevant research experience, and be able to work independently. The Wildlife Conservation Society Archives (located at the Bronx Zoo) is currently accepting applications for an archival processing internship from graduate students preparing for careers in libraries, archives, or related cultural institutions.   

Under the guidance of the WCS Processing Archivist, the Archives Processing Intern will gain experience in various components of archival processing and description.  Projects include surveying, arranging, and describing archival collections; entering data into an archival management system; and creating EAD finding aids.

While WCS Archives internships are unpaid, we are happy to work with academic institutions so that students can get academic credit for their internship.  Interns should be able to commit at least 100 hours to the internship.  Interns must schedule their hours Monday through Friday, 9-5.

Description of Intelligence Center Research Library

The Ogilvy Intelligence Center Research Library is a cutting edge, inspirational environment - a service that brings the outside, in. Internship Summary

This internship would be ideal for a candidate with background and/or interest in marketing, advertising, and consumer psychology.

The Position
Assist the Communications Department with the digitization of the audiovisual collection of the Lindesmith Library.  The Lindesmith Library is one of the world’s leading resources for scientific information on drug policy as well as an outstanding source of information on drug policy reform. The collection of contemporary and historical articles, books, and films is unmatched, and the services of the library play a critical role in advancing an honest and informed public discourse about drug issues.

The Lindesmith Library was founded in 1995 and named after Professor Alfred Lindesmith of Indiana University, the first prominent scholar in the U.S. to challenge conventional thinking about drugs, addiction, and drug policy. The collection contains more than 15,000 books, audio recordings, articles, and videos focusing on drugs and drug policy from economic, criminal justice, public health and other perspectives.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Utilize hardware and software to create digital copies of VHS and audio cassette tapes
  • Create and refine metadata for library records of video and audio collection
Based in DPA’s New York City headquarters, the Digitization Intern will be part of DPA’s Communications team and report to the Managing Director of Communications.  One day of training on a Tuesday will be necessary.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
  • At least one completed semester at an accredited library and information science program OR media program is required.
  • Previous cataloging experience, library experience, digitization experience, and/or experience in substance abuse related work are pluses.

The Lesbian Herstory Archives needs you to help process  a very large book donation this spring.

We are looking for students who have some library school experience or actual experience working in a library.

Students will be supervised by an M.L.S. librarian and other archives staff.
This internship is unpaid but course credit can be arranged.

Objectives
  • To experience the interaction between the practicing library and information professionals and users with their unique information needs.
  • To understand the sociological environment in which the information center operates, the community in which it is situated, and the management of human resources within the institution itself.

Duration of the Assignment

Scope of the Assignment

The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a motivated Library/ Information Science student with an interest in Medical (Hospital) libraries to assist the Medical Librarian in the creation of online Scholarly Communication guide which includes copyright information, authors’ rights, and other tools and resources to write and publish in academic journals, as well as assisting the library’s daily operation.

Duties:
This internship opportunity is focused on the special project of creating an innovative digital tool or online guide focused on Scholarly Communication, in addition to the library’s daily operation.

The library’s daily operation incudes:
          Assist in interlibrary loan and document delivery (NLMs Docline)
Assist HSS residents/fellows/staff in use of library resources
          -Including PubMed, Ovid, MDConsult, and RefWorks
Assist providing library orientations

Desired Qualifications:
The opportunity is available to any Library Science student with an interest in medical libraries, but special consideration will be given to candidates with the following:

The Archives and Records Management Office of the ACLU National Office, located in downtown Manhattan, is seeking interns for the summer of 2014.

The ACLU National Archives maintains records from the founding of the organization in 1920 and does its part to support the ACLU's mission to defend the U.S. Constitution, in particular the Bill of Rights. The primary goal of the Archives is to ensure access to our paper and electronic records through the application of sound records management and archival principles. In collaboration with the administrative, financial, legal, technical, and business staff of the organization, we seek to store, manage, and retrieve records throughout their life cycle, from creation to either disposal or retention. In addition to the 1,700 linear feet of records we keep onsite, we have an extensive collection of ephemera, publications, photographs, and audiovisual materials.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship
Programme, the following conditions must be met:1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a
library science, audio-visual archives, communications, information science, media studies, journalism, or related field graduate programme; or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a library science, audio-visual archives, communications, information science, media studies, journalism, or related field bachelor's degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in library science, audio-visual archives, communications, information science, media studies, journalism, or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. 2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of
different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand
and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
No professional work experience required.
Languages
English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship
advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official
language in addition to Korean, Italian and Japanese is an advantaged.

P/T - Records & Archives Internship - NYC DEP (Manhattan)

Overview:
The Records and Archives Management Unit collects, preserves, and makes available records having long-term business and historical value to DEP and NYC. The records document the development and operation of New York City’s immense water supply and distribution system. Not only are these records historically important to engineering, science, and New York City, but they are also critical to the continuing operation of the NYC water supply system.

The selected candidate will work with the Records and Archives Management team to inventory archival collections (drawings, photography, publications, and/or textural records) relating to the planning and construction of the New York City water supply.  Many of these collections have been partially inventoried and are a high priority for research. Other responsibilities may include digitizing/copying collections, assisting with projects to support digital collections, creating social media items based on historical photos, and conducting research for user requests.  

This is a paid position.
Qualifications:
Preferred Skills:Interest in local history, government or engineering.  Strong written and verbal communication
skills, excellent organizational and planning skills, detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to work well following a written project plan with minimal supervision.  Proficient in full Microsoft Office suite of applications, particularly Excel.

  • Student must currently be enrolled at a college/university at the graduate level pursuing a degree in library science, archival studies, history, or a related field.
  • Student must have at least a 2.5GPA (on a 4.0 scale)

Our client, Credit Suisse, is seeking two (2) interns to perform corporate and business research as part of their Business Research Centre team.

ROLE SUMMARY
Information Specialist
This is a research position for an individual who is enrolled in an MLS program. The individual in this position will be answering research requests from our clients. Knowledge of the financial markets and investment banking is a plus.
RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Answering client information requests by providing accurate information efficiently and in a cost-effective manner
§ Develop successful working relationships with front office employees / professionals and business units on an ongoing basis
§ Communicate confidently and effectively with demanding users, seeking senior management assistance when appropriate
