P/T - Fall Internship/Volunteer - The Chancellor Robert R Livingston Masonic Library (Manhattan)




The Livingston Library seeks accomplished interns and volunteers from MLIS Graduate Programs to assist in various projects in the library. Start and end dates are flexible, and students must commit one full day per week. The Livingston Library is open 8:30-4:30 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and open from 12-8 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Internships are unpaid, but hours can be used for educational credit.
Students may choose to focus on one, or a combination, of the following aspects of librarianship:

-Archives: Students will learn how to process and re-house 19th and 20th century material, which will result in inventory lists and finding aids. These inventory lists and finding aids can be used in students’ portfolio, as an example of their work. Students will also have the opportunity to contribute images and blogs to our Social Media accounts.
-Museum: Students will catalogue, photograph, and conduct data entry for our Masonic Apron and Fabric Collection. This collection will provide students with the opportunity to handle material that dates back to the 1700s. Students will also be given the opportunity to design and mount an exhibit, in one of our cases.
 
-General Library: Students will have the opportunity to actively participate in daily library activities. These activities include: interacting directly with visitors and researchers, basic reference, stack management, and preservation work.



Requirements:

-Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an MLIS program

-Interested in either pursuing a career in librarianship or curation
-Ability to lift, bend, and reach boxes or volumes weighing up to 30 pounds

-Well-organized and detail oriented

-Ability to work independently

P/T - Archives Internship, New York Public Radio (Manhattan)


Interns at NYPR are given a robust internship program with hands-on responsibilities.  The goal of our internship program is to provide our interns with a substantive, meaningful work experience so that each intern concludes the internship period with demonstrable skills in his/her area of interest, plus knowledge of public radio, in general.  
The NYPR Radio Archives currently maintains a collection of more than 60,000 cataloged broadcast recordings dating from June 1927 to the present. These recordings cover the gamut of the station's activities as one of the nation's earliest public broadcasters. 

This internship will provide an opportunity for a qualified student to collaborate with the Archives’ staff on several ongoing digitization and access projects.  Over the course of the fall, the intern will learn the analog-to-digital transfer process, work within the Archives’ PBCore database, and help create content for the Archives’ website.

What your internship will entail: 
  • Hands on experience in archives management
  • Learn analog-to-digital workflows for archival audio preservation
  • Learn standards-based media cataloging
  • Contribute to the archives social media presence: writing blog posts; curating Tumblr page.
  • Cataloging broadcast material, cleaning and replacing tapes
  • Duplicating and quality controlling CDs
  • Reformatting archival recordings
  • Assisting Archives staff in organizing holdings in the vault
  • Identifying orphan materials

 Requirements: 
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Be familiar with public radio
  • Have an interest in audio archives
  • Have some familiarity with audio formats
  • Have some familiarity with the PBCore metadata schema
  • Have a good sense of 20th-century history
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited library school or archives program to earn course credit
  • Must be consistently available for a minimum of 15 hours per week
  • Must have a proven willingness to learn new skills

P/T - Digital Intern, New York Academy of Medicine (Manhattan)

The New York Academy of Medicine’s Library is looking for a digital intern to work in the Library’s digital program.  The internship will provide hands-on experience with creating and editing metadata for digitization projects, and conducting quality control of scanned images and digital collections.



The Intern will have an opportunity to learn about the digitization process and how to build digital collections. 



We are looking for an intern who is imaginative and interested in learning more about developing digital collections and how metadata is used to enhance collections. 



The internship is paid and may be taken for course credit.



Duties and Responsibilities


·         Conduct quality control on scanned images and digital collections

·         Collect, edit, create and organize metadata according to standards

·         Count pages of volumes as needed

Qualifications and Experience


·         Experience with metadata schemas (e.g. MODS, Dublin Core, MARC, IPTC etc.)

·         Knowledge of XML, XSLT, OCLC

·         Familiarity with technology, digital collections, and/or digital humanities projects

·         Coursework in Library and Information Science

Hours


Approximately 10 hours a week for 12 weeks.  Intern must be available 2 days per week between the hours of 10:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Thursday.
