P/T - Cataloging Internship - Museum of the City of New York, Ephemera Collections (NYC)

The Museum of the City of New York seeks student Interns to work in conjunction with a project to process, catalog, digitize, and rehouse the Ephemera Collections of the Museum of the City of New York. The interns will work alongside one part-time employee and the Museum's Assistant Director of Collections to process over 6500 objects in order to prepare them for digitization. Tasks include but are not limited to conducting condition assessments, recording dimensions and locations, and re-housing. Interns will be trained by the Project Manager, and have the opportunity to become familiar with the Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) data content standard, gain experience in object handling, and obtain first-hand knowledge of the steps involved in a large digitization process. Interns will also create complete catalog records with descriptive and physical metadata for those objects exuded from the digitization process that will not be accessible to the public, but only internally to the Museum staff. 

propriate candidates will be currently enrolled in Master's program in Information and Library Science, with at least some coursework in archival studies. Preferred skills and qualifications include previous coursework working with cultural objects; familiarity to CCO data content standard; knowledge or demonstrated interest in theater history; exposure to collections management systems such as ARGUS, Past Perfect, or TMS; and experience handling fragile objects.

The Internship requires a minimum commitment of two full days a week (7 hours), scheduled during the Monday-Friday workweek for the duration of a semester. Students with an interest in working with the Theater Collection may have the opportunity to structure those days to include work with both collections. internships are unpaid. Preference will be given to students completing the internship for course credit.

P/T - Archival Intern - The American Folk Art Museum (Lincoln Center, Manhattan)

The American Folk Art Museum (AFAM) is currently accepting applications for an archival intern for the Spring 2015 semester. The AFAM archives is currently undergoing a major processing and cataloging project as we prepare for the opening of our new Folk Art Annex and Study Center in 2015. Internships are unpaid, but we will happily work with graduate programs to arrange for academic credit. The intern should be able to commit to at least one full day a week, from approximately January through May 2015.

Projects will be varied, and may include, but are not limited to:
- Helping to prepare archival material to move to our new location
- Surveying collections (including creating preliminary inventories and processing plans)
- Processing and rehousing paper and photograph collections
- Creating accession and resource records in ArchivesSpace
- Writing finding aids

The archival internship is open to students currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Master of Library Science program, preferably with a concentration in archival studies, and who have completed all introductory courses. Successful candidates will be knowledgeable of basic archival principles, are motivated and detail-oriented, are able to work both independently and in a team, and have basic research skills.

The New York City Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) mission is to foster civic life by preserving and providing access to the historical and current records of New York City government, to ensure City records are properly maintained following professional archival and record management practices, and to make materials available to diverse communities both online and in person at the Municipal Library, Archives and Visitor Center.  The Municipal Archives Division is responsible for preserving and providing access to more than 250,000 cubic feet of records.

The NYC DORIS, Municipal Archives Division is currently accepting applications for ongoing internships. Ideal candidates will be currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a   Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences. Familiarity with New York History, Archival Studies, or related fields considered a plus. Individuals who have taken coursework in cataloging, rare books, conservation, archival management, and/or digital preservation are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Description
Interns will work in a variety of departments focusing on projects involving processing, conservation, and digitization. Possible internship tasks may include archival processing, cataloging, basic conservation repairs, rehousing, and digitization. Internships will provide students with real professional experience at the largest municipal archive in the United States.

Qualifications
Applicants must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate of an accredited educational institution pursuing a degree in library science, archival studies, or a related field. P/T - Museum Internship - Rights and Permissions Group/Department of Digital Media of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC)

The Rights and Permissions Group/Department of Digital Media of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is looking for current college seniors and graduate students who are interested in applying for an unpaid internship for the spring 2015 semester.  Under the supervision of professional staff, interns will gain first-hand experience by cataloguing digital content related to the museum’s intellectual property, and participating in special projects.

The Rights and Permissions Group is responsible for the oversight and management of all copyright information in the Museum’s digital asset management system, and establishing metadata standards and requirements for cataloguing of relevant digital assets within the DAM.

We are a very busy department and can offer a variety of work for anyone intrigued by an alternative library experience.

The spring Internship will be from mid-January to mid-May. Standard internship requirements would be a minimum of at least two full days (14 hours) per week during business hours. The department is only open Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00, and closed on the weekends.

Interns will be eligible for employee discounts at the Museum’s public restaurant, Membership Dining Room, the Museum’s retail stores, and free admission to all other New York City museums.

P/T - Archival Internship - The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism Research Center (NYC)


The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism Research Center is dedicated to providing students and faculty with the latest research training, tools and resources for journalists. We are seeking an unpaid intern for a one-semester appointment of 10-15 hours per week. The intern will report to the Library Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will provide assistance with metadata/indexing/taxonomy for a digital archive of the school’s photos and videos, as well as for Campus Wire, a central site for news published by journalism programs across CUNY campuses. The candidate will also gain some experience in cataloging, circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan services; maintaining the Research Center Website and Capstone Archive; marketing Research Center services via social media; and other duties and special projects as assigned by the Chief Librarian.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must:
· Be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program and have a minimum of 18 credits toward their degree.
· Commit to a one-semester appointment.
· Have completed a course in archiving and reference/electronic resources.

P/T - Archival Internship - CUNY TV (NYC)

Serving the New York area for nearly 30 years, CUNY TV is the largest public university station in the United States. Based at the CUNY Graduate Center, the channel produces and broadcasts unique and educational programs with topics ranging from science, public affairs, business and science. The CUNY TV archive maintains the stations vast tape library, digital assets and the overall production history of the station. The CUNY TV archive is also the home to much of the audiovisual material produced by the City University of New York and the Himan Brown Radio Archive, a collection that includes the personal papers, scripts, photographs and audio-visual material related to the famed radio director and producer.

An internship with CUNY TV provides students with a great opportunity to learn more about and participate in digitization, collection management, digital preservation, and media cataloging. It also gives students the chance to work with a variety of analog and digital audiovisual formats. Interns will learn how to properly catalog, store and preserve different media formats. They will also have the opportunity to work on a number of projects including collection inventory, born-dgiital processing, access, and assessment along with ongoing audiovisual digitization projects.

Students interested in experiencing how an audiovisual archive functions in a busy broadcast and production environment are encouraged to apply. This internship is for credit only.

P/T - Archival and Records Management Internship - The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation (NYC)

The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation is accepting applications for a motivated, detail-oriented intern who is eager to learn and can work well individually and as part of a focused team.

Candidates may complete this internship in conjunction with upper-level undergraduate or graduate coursework in programs such as art history, information science, or archival management. Prior experience with the methods of collection management and provenance research would be an asset.

Duties will vary within the daily operations of the Foundation, however this internship is being offered in conjunction with a large archival and records management project scheduled to begin February 2015. Successful candidates should be well suited to fact-checking and information reconciliation using both paper files and information output from a database, including images, and internal press/library records

Commitment:
One to two days per week, from 10am – 6pm through May 2015, with the possibility extension based upon the needs of the Foundation and applicant.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an independent, non-profit educational institution dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the historical development of baseball and its impact on our culture by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting its collections for a global audience as well as honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to our national pastime.

The Frank and Peggy Steele Internship Program for Youth Leadership Development provides meaningful, hands-on training in numerous professional careers including research, photo archives, technical services, exhibit design, membership, education, archives and collections management, recorded media, development, special events, programs and events, multi-media, publications, and public relations. In addition, interns learn and work in the company of baseball's best-known personalities during the annual Hall of Fame Weekend and Induction Ceremony, held in Cooperstown each summer.

To be considered for the Frank and Peggy Steele Internship Program for Youth Leadership Development, students must have completed at least their sophomore year and be enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program at a college or university during the internship, or have just graduated in May of 2015. All Steele interns receive a bi-weekly stipend during the ten weeks of the program and access to affordable student housing. P/T - Archival Internship - Bronx Community College Archives (Bronx)

The Bronx Community College Archives seeks applications for a part-time,
unpaid intern to work with the Archives beginning in Spring 2015. The collection is comprised of 40 cartons containing papers and objects, (medallions, plaques, busts, newsprint, etc.) related to the selection, election, careers, and media coverage of the persons represented in the Hall of Fame, a National Landmark located at the University Heights campus. Materials found include memoranda and personal correspondence, office records, university publications, research files, publicity materials, photographs, and more.
The intern will report to the Archivist of the BCC Archives & Special Collections, a unit of
Library. Assisted by a student worker from college, the Intern will work on processing
prioritized record groups and series, and assist in producing a finding aid that will be made
available to researchers and the general public.
The intern’s duties will include:
● Processing collection utilizing MPLP approach and rehousing material in new archival
folders and boxes.
● Address basic physical preservation needs and make recommendations for
materials requiring further conservation work.
● Research history/background of Hall of Fame. Key moments to be described in the
finding aid, in accordance with DACS and other professional standards.
● Provide description and enter into CMS for finding aid.
● Prepare materials for online exhibit, time permitting.
Prospective interns should be currently enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate
program focusing on archival practice and be familiar with the basic tenets of archival processing
and digitization, as well as being able to provide research services. Technical requirements
include MS Office; CMS and other nonproprietary
database knowledge are encouraged.
Spring internships require a minimum commitment of 2 days per week. Can provide academic

P/T - Archives and Records Management Internship - ACLU National Office Archives (Manhattan)

The Archives and Records Management Office of the ACLU National Office, located in downtown Manhattan, is seeking interns for the spring of 2015.

The ACLU National Archives maintains records from the founding of the organization in 1920 and does its part to support the ACLU's mission to defend the U.S. Constitution, in particular the Bill of Rights. The primary goal of the Archives is to ensure access to our paper and electronic records through the application of sound records management and archival principles. In collaboration with the administrative, financial, legal, technical, and business staff of the organization, we seek to store, manage, and retrieve records throughout their life cycle, from creation to either disposal or retention. In addition to the 2,000 cubic feet of records we keep onsite, we have an extensive collection of ephemera, publications, photographs, and audiovisual materials.

We are looking for interns to assist on a variety of projects, including, but not limited to:
  1. Digitizing paper collections
  2. Processing archival collections
  3. Cataloging
  4. Updating existing finding aids for ongoing collections
  5. Developing research and reference skills


Additional projects will be assigned to interns based upon their interests and experience. Students with an interest in archives and records management centers in non-traditional library settings are encouraged to apply.

​The Lesbian Herstory Archives  (located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC) is looking for students who are interested in gaining library and/or archives experience with a demonstrated interest in Lesbian Studies, History and Activism.  We have a number of exciting ​ongoing ​projects for the upcoming academic year​.​  Students must be currently enrolled in an M.L.S., Archival or DAM studies program to apply. ​Interns will work in a team with professional web developers to overhaul the LHA website. Students will have the opportunity to attend coding courses and access other web-development related instruction​​. Experience with introduction level CSS/HTML coding is required. Experience using Square Space (or a similar web development platform) preferred.​

Summary

Under the guidance of the WCS Institutional Archivist and Digital Resources Manager, the Photo Archives and Digital Asset Management will gain experience in the care and management of historical and modern photo collections.  While WCS Archives internships are unpaid, we are happy to work with academic institutions so that students can get academic credit for their internship.  Interns should be able to commit at least 104 hours to the internship. 

Objectives

  • digitize historical prints according to professional standards
  • assist with the ingest of current photo assets into WCS’s digital asset management system
  • research and record metadata about current and historical photographic materials
  • the creation of one or more posts documenting the internship for Wild Things, the WCS Archives Blog

Qualifications

  • enrollment in or recent completion of graduate program (within the last 6 months) in library science, museum studies, or a related field
  • strong interest in the management of photographic collections
  • experience with archival collections and/or photographic materials is preferred
  • working knowledge of the ingest, cataloging, storage, retrieval, and distribution of digital assets in a Digital Asset Management system
  • experience with professional digitization standards and with photo software and scanning software
  • familiarity with standard metadata schema and vocabularies

P/T - Spring Library Internship - Oskar Diethelm Library at Weill Cornell Medical College (Manhattan)

The Oskar Diethelm Library is a special collection devoted to the history of psychiatry. It is part of Weill Cornell Medical College's Institute for the History of Psychiatry. The Library collection includes some 50,000 items dating from the 15th to the 20th century, in nearly every possible format, including rare books, serials, archives and manuscripts, photographs, prints, sound and video recordings, and other ephemera. Materials relate to psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis, mesmerism, spiritualism, phrenology, witchcraft and other topics. Archival holdings include the papers of numerous organizations and individuals.

This internship will involve gathering, organizing, and cataloging the library’s audio visual collections, including cassette tapes, videotapes, CDs, DVDs and other media formats. Cataloging will be done in PastPerfect, a collection management software system. No prior experience using PastPerfect software is necessary. This is a good opportunity for a motivated student who wants to be involved with a project from start to finish. The intern will also have some say in the planning of the project and how it is carried out. The intern should be willing to help with other library and archives related tasks as they come up.

Prospective interns should be enrolled in an advanced degree program in Archival Administration or Library and Information Studies with an interest in archives. Previous experience in library or archives preferred but not required. Reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are essential. The internship will be during normal business hours, at least 8 hours a week preferred. The internship is unpaid but can be done for course credit.

Poets House, a nonprofit literary organization with a 60,000-volume non-circulating library of poetry books, chapbooks, and multimedia, is looking for interns and volunteers starting immediately.

The Center for Marketing Intelligence is looking for a Library Assistant Intern. This would be a great learning opportunity for someone with administrative experience that is interested in the more research-oriented side of information work.



Overview:

This position handles all periodical and library-related subscriptions, coordinates research-related contracts, and resolves billing issues. The Library Assistant will provide administrative support to the department head and serve as the department point-person for receipt of vendor invoices, time off recordkeeping, the department calendar and reception duty as required. This is a paid position with growth potential.


Responsibilities:

·  Order, check-in, route, and maintain periodical (paper and online) subscriptions and passwords. Troubleshoot missing issues and other problems, working with subscription agent and directly with publishers. (Learning objective: most libraries/information centers perform this activity so it is important to learn as the candidate might do it or supervise it during his or her career)

·  Co-ordinate ordering and payment for books, reports, association memberships, etc. (Learning objective: like above, this is a typical library/information center function)

·  Co-ordinate organization wide, research-related contracts (e.g., Lexis Nexis):

·  prepare pre-approval forms for user participation

·  reconcile billing issues

·  maintain subscription files

·  monthly accrual report

·  (Learning objective: Working with vendors & contracts has become an important library/information center function: candidate will probably use this experience later in career)

·  Process department vendor invoices (Learning objective: typical library/information center work)

·  General administrative support, including monitoring dept. calendar & time-off records, maintaining phone lists and organization charts

Qualifications:
