P/T - Archival Internship - NYC Department of Records & Information Services (NYC)


The New York City Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS) mission is to foster civic life by preserving and providing access to the historical and current records of New York City government, to ensure City records are properly maintained following professional archival and record management practices, and to make materials available to diverse communities both online and in person at the Municipal Library, Archives and Visitor Center.  The Municipal Archives Division is responsible for preserving and providing access to more than 250,000 cubic feet of records.

The NYC DORIS, Municipal Archives Division is currently accepting applications for ongoing internships. Ideal candidates will be currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a   Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences. Familiarity with New York History, Archival Studies, or related fields considered a plus. Individuals who have taken coursework in cataloging, rare books, conservation, archival management, and/or digital preservation are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Description
Interns will work in a variety of departments focusing on projects involving processing, conservation, and digitization. Possible internship tasks may include archival processing, cataloging, basic conservation repairs, rehousing, and digitization. Internships will provide students with real professional experience at the largest municipal archive in the United States.

Qualifications
Applicants must be currently enrolled or a recent graduate of an accredited educational institution pursuing a degree in library science, archival studies, or a related field. Students must be in good academic standing and have completed at least one year in a library science or archival studies program.
Time commitments for internships are flexible but must be completed during working hours from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday. All internship positions are unpaid, but can be done for course credit or work experience.
