P/T - Archives Intern, American Trust for the British Library (Manhattan)

Job Opening Title: Archives Intern (part-time)

Employer Name: The American Trust for the British Library

Job Location: New York, NY

Application Deadline: October 24, 2022

Salary: $15/hour

Job Description: The American Trust for the British Library (ATBL) seeks a student intern to work on an archival digitization project. This is a great opportunity for a current graduate student to work on a small digitization and access project from beginning to end.

The American Trust for the British Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes and supports the work of the British Library, one of the world’s greatest research libraries. The ATBL seeks to foster transatlantic understanding through events, lectures, and discussion in the United States and in the United Kingdom, as well as through fundraising and incremental financial support and gifts in-kind that help the British Library fulfill its collecting, preservation, and outreach missions.

Qualifications required: Must have a B.A. and be enrolled in a graduate-level library science or Archives program with demonstrated knowledge of archival principles and best practices. Open to recent graduates of an MLIS or Archives program. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

Project description:  The American Trust for the British Library Archive consists of 6 boxes of paper materials (6 linear feet) of the business and historical records of the ATBL, and includes financial and legal records, correspondence, grants and foundations information, publications, photographs, event invitations, and other materials generated by the organization between 1979 and 2020. The Grolier Club Library is the official repository for the ATBL records.

In preparation for the ATBL’s upcoming website redesign, the Archives Intern will inventory, digitize, and catalogue photographs and other visual materials (such as programs and brochures) from its archival collection. The work must be performed on site at the Grolier Club Library, located at 47 East 60th Street, New York, NY. This is a part-time position ideal for a graduate student.

The ATBL will provide a document scanner to be used for the purpose of this project. The intern will need to provide their own laptop.

Supervised by: Administrative and Communications Coordinator & Executive Director

Payment and Terms of Internship: The intern will receive $15 per hour and will work 5–8 hours per week for approximately 6 weeks. Starting and ending dates are negotiable but the work should be completed by February 2023. The intern will account for their hours on a document supplied by the ATBL.

Application Process: Applications should include: 1) A letter of application stating how your education, work and/or volunteer experience, and personal interests qualify you for this project; 2) A résumé or curriculum vitae (CV); and 3) The name, title, and contact info (e-mail address and phone #) for two references able to speak to your qualifications for this internship. References will be contacted during the selection process.

The deadline for application is October 24, 2022. Please submit all inquiries, letters of application, and résumés or CVs to info@atbl.us.
