Library and Archives Internship at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Summer 2022

 

Department: Research Resources – Library and Archives Intern

 

Expected projects/work assignments

-        Assist with the circulation of library materials.

-        Assist with supervising the reading room and assisting on-site researchers.

-        Assist with reference inquiries from staff and external researchers.

-        Assist with statistical recordkeeping for the measurement of reference services.

-        Digitize and prepare digital surrogates of analog materials.

 

Skills and qualifications required (including technology skills)

-        Ideal candidate is a current student or recent graduate who has completed at least one semester in a Library and Information Science program, or related graduate program.

-        Interest in modern and contemporary American art and museum work.

-        Ability to work independently with attention to detail.

-        Experience with conducting research inquiries using an ILS and/or Archival Finding Aids is preferred.

-        Ability to lift cartons (up to 30lbs) is helpful.

 

What type of training will be provided?

-        In-person and remote reference and research services.

-        General art library policies and procedures.

-        Use of our OPAC, WhitneyCat, and Koha ILS.

-        Use of ArchivesSpace, our catalog for archival collections.

-        Technical standards for the creation of digital surrogates.

 

Outcomes

-        First-hand experience in multiple areas related to the operations of library and archives in a museum setting.

-        Library reference experience; the opportunity to work with both Whitney staff researchers and visiting scholars.

-        Increased knowledge of reference services and library and archives catalogs.

-        An understanding of how the Whitney’s research collections support unique areas of inquiry.

Paid Summer 2022 Internship for Graduate Student - The Metropolitan Museum of Art Archives

 

Met Archives

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Archives collects, preserves and makes accessible for research corporate records of the Museum, and promotes an informed and enduring understanding of its institutional history.  Archives holdings date from 1870 through the early 21st century, and document the Met's art collection, past exhibitions, curatorial practice, and administration. The summer 2022 intern will collaborate with staff archivists to preserve digital Museum records, provide reference assistance to Museum staff and non-staff scholars, and engage in historical research. A special focus of the 2022 internship will be metadata analysis and creation for digitized historical records, and transfer of digital assets into the Museum’s DAM.  The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a graduate program in library/information science or archives management. In addition to developing practical work skills through this departmental placement, the intern will participate in MuSe (Museum Seminars) and interact directly with the Museum's diverse audience by conducting a gallery talk based on their area of expertise.

The Museum Seminar (MuSe) Internship Program awards paid ten-week summer internships to graduate students interested in a career in the arts and fields related to the Met’s many departments. The Met has over forty department areas, including Museum Archives, that host interns from a wide variety of academic backgrounds with an interest in art and museums. In addition to developing skills through special projects with Met staff, MuSe interns train to lead their own public tours in the galleries and participate in a weekly seminar series on museum practice.

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY:


The Advertising Research Foundation Knowledge Center provides research and insights to support ARF members – marketers, agencies, media, adtech, and other leading players in the advertising and marketing ecosystem. 


We are seeking an enthusiastic intern to help support a team of experienced business librarians in answering ARF member research requests covering a broad range of business topics on advertising, media, marketing, and market research methods. 


This is an exciting opportunity for library students to gain professional business experience in a supportive learning environment, especially in desk and reference research. 


The position calls for a meticulous but creative problem-solver, who is organized but flexible to handle fast deadlines and last minute requests. 


This is a paid internship at the rate of $20 per hour for graduate library students. 


For now, this would be entirely remote. We can work with you to accommodate your school schedule, but there should be some availability during office hours: 9am to 6pm EST. Ideally be available 15 hours per week.


QUALIFICATIONS


Currently in a graduate program for library and information science


Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

High proficiency in computer and secondary research skills 


Working knowledge about media, advertising, or marketing a huge plus  

Secondary business research experience a huge plus

Health Sciences Library Volunteer

This opportunity will provide experience in a variety of activities within a very active academic health sciences library. This includes but is not limited to: providing reference assistance via email and online chat, teaching information literacy skills, and marketing/outreach. The volunteer will also be involved in special projects as needed, for example, collection assessment, resource development, systematic reviews, and more. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Master’s of Library Science program, or equivalent, or have recently graduated with an MLS. A strong interest in health sciences librarianship or academic librarianship is required. Some experience in the field of health sciences or knowledge of field-specific concepts/terminology is preferred. This is an unpaid position, however there is the potential to earn course credit. Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a motivated Library/Information Science student with an interest in hospital libraries to assist the Medical Librarian in the special project of creating resource guides for HSS staff.
Duties In addition to the special project, you will also have the opportunity to participate in the library’s daily operation including:


• Assist in interlibrary loan and document delivery (NLM’s Docline)
• Assist HSS staff in use of library resources
o Including PubMed, CINAHL, ClinicalKey, UpToDate and RefWorks
• Assist with library orientations


Desired Qualifications
The opportunity is available to any Library Science student with an interest in medical libraries, but special consideration will be given to candidates with the following:
• Completion of coursework in Health Sciences Resources
• Experience with Content Management Systems and/or web design
• Strong communication skills


Stipend
The internship position is being offered with a daily stipend and/or an opportunity for course credit.


Hours
The candidate would need to be able to commit a minimum of 10 hours a week (e.g. 2 days at 5 hours per day - 1 day remote, 1 day onsite). The schedule is flexible, but would need to be Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm ET.

Key Responsibilities: 

The selected candidate will work directly with UNICEF’s archivists on selected archives management activities which include:  

  • Processing archival records according to the ISAD(G) standard; 

  • Housing archival records in archival folders and boxes including other repository management duties; 

  • Create descriptive metadata and producing finding aids for archival records; 

  • Preparation of physical records for digitization; 

  • Access and reference services; 

  • Any other duties as required.

Academic Degrees:

Oskar Diethelm Library Internship

The Oskar Diethelm Library at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City is seeking an intern for the Fall 2021 semester.

Founded in 1936, the Diethelm Library houses, preserves, and provides access to printed books and serials, archives and manuscripts, photographs, prints, sound and video recordings, and other ephemera and is part of Weill Cornell Medical College's DeWitt Wallace Institute of Psychiatry: History, Policy, & the Arts. The library’s rare book collection contains approximately 35,000 titles dating back to the 15th century dealing with psychiatry, psychology, psychoanalysis, mesmerism, spiritualism, phrenology, witchcraft, and related topics. World-renowned individuals and organizations are represented in the approximately 1500 linear feet of archives, including Donald W. A variety of projects are currently available at the library, depending on the interests of the intern; these include:

-creating an EAD finding aid through the Empire ADC system for an unprocessed collection

-cataloging rare books and journals in WorldCat and the Surpass book catalog

-cataloging and digitizing asylum reports

Prospective interns should be enrolled in an advanced degree program in Library and Information Science or Archival Administration. Previous experience in libraries or archives is preferred, but not required. Reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are essential. The internship will be on weekdays between 9am to 5pm, at least 6 hours per week preferred, and COVID-19 vaccination is required. A travel stipend will be provided, and the internship can be done for course credit.
