Research Intern, Whitney Museum of Art (Manhattan)

Research Resources – Library Intern


Expected projects/work assignments:


− Create original and copy cataloging in MARC for library materials.
− Create preservation housings for Library Special Collections materials.
− Assist with providing in-person and remote reference services.
− Assist with the circulation of library materials.
− Assist with supervising the reading room and on-site researchers.
− Assist with reference inquiries from staff and external researchers.


Skills and qualifications required (including technology skills):


− Ideal candidate is a current student or recent graduate who has completed at least one semester in a Library and Information Science program, or related graduate program.
− Experience with library cataloging (MARC, RDA, LCSH, LC classification) and/or preservation a plus.
− Interest in modern and contemporary American art and museum work.
− Ability to work independently with attention to detail.
− Experience with conducting research using an ILS.
− Ability to lift cartons (up to 30lbs) is helpful.


What type of training will be provided?


− General art library policies and procedures.
− Use of our OPAC, WhitneyCat, and Koha ILS.
− Library cataloging and MARC/RDA metadata creation.
− Basics of hands-on preservation rehousing for a variety of library materials.
− Reference and user services skills.


Outcomes


− First-hand experience in multiple areas related to the operations of library a museum setting
− An understanding of how the Whitney’s research collections support unique areas of inquiry
− The opportunity to work with both Whitney staff researchers and visiting scholars
− Increased knowledge of metadata, reference, and circulation of library resources

The archives Intern will develop archival management skills and contribute to the building up of a viable archival repository that preserves and packages its information resources for easy and effective access. The intern will report to the UNICEF Archives Archivist. This internship will be for a period of 6 months. 

How can you make a difference? 

Key Responsibilities: 

The selected candidate will work directly with UNICEF’s archivists on selected archives management activities which include:  

  • Processing archival records according to the ISAD(G) standard; 

  • Housing archival records in archival folders and boxes including other repository management duties; 

  • Create descriptive metadata and producing finding aids for archival records; 

  • Preparation of physical records for digitization; 

  • Access and reference services; 

  • Any other duties as required.  

Deliverables: 

  • Creation of Archival Finding aids 

  • Descriptive Metadata lists 

  • Digitization of archival items  

  • Archival items stored in appropriate folders and boxes properly labelled 

 Travel 

  • Travel is not required. 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Academic Degrees: 

  • To be enrolled in a degree programme in an undergraduate or graduate school in archival studies or related field, or be a recent graduate within the past two (2) years with specific post-secondary education in archival studies or related field. 

  • A strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records. 

  • A reference letter from a current or past academic supervisor. 

Professional Experience: 

  • Demonstrated understanding of international archival standards, including ISAD(G). 

  • Demonstrated understanding of archival metadata standards and their application. 

Other Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.  

  • Be a United States citizen or have a valid US student visa and be able to work legally in the US during the duration of the internship. 

  • No immediate relatives working in any UNICEF office or have any other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to. 

Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.   

Salary/Payment: UNICEF will provide a monthly stipend during the duration of this Internship. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. 

Insurance: UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern's service. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrolment in a health/accident plan prior to starting his/her work.
