The Vilcek Foundation will hire a part-time Archival Intern (3 days/week) for a 10-week program during weekdays from June 6 – August 12, 2022. The Archival Intern will support the foundation’s archive initiative and assist the foundation’s president and co-founders as needed. Interns will also complete a number of team projects in collaboration with other interns. The foundation is headquartered in New York City, and there are both in-person and hybrid remote/in-person opportunities available. Interns will only be paid for the hours they work, and are not paid for holidays, sick days and/or any time off including personal appointments.

The Archival Intern role is open to master’s graduates, current graduate students with strong academic records, or to individuals with equivalent course work and work experience at the rate of $25 per hour.

 

Job Responsibilities

The Archival Intern will provide creative and technical support to both the Archivist and the Associate Archivist and complete the below projects:

  • Scan historical registrar files that document the Vilcek Foundation Art Collection (40%);
  • Help arrange and rehouse hardcopy correspondence and ephemera that document the Vilcek Foundation’s prizes, grants, and exhibitions into acid-free folders and manuscript boxes for long-term preservation (40%);
  • Create an inventory list of books of the Vilcek Foundation’s holdings, ranging from books on general art references, books by past prizewinners, using the tool Libib (20%).

 

Work Requirements

Applicants must have the ability to work in the United States without visa sponsorship. Applicants must be able to work from a personal computer and sit for long periods of time in front of a computer screen. As employees of the foundation, interns must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

 

Skills Requirements

  • Knowledge of archival theory preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience with deaccessioning preferred
  • Knowledge of digitization standards preferred
  • Experience with finding aids in a special collections library preferred
  • Experience handling archival material preferred
  • The ability to lift up to 25 lbs
  • University/college graduate OR current university/college student with a strong academic track record OR individual with equivalent coursework and work experience
  • Strong interest in learning about nonprofits and the arts
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Excellent research skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
  • Experience with Google Drive and/or Dropbox
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong public-speaking skills and willingness to present work
  • Attention to detail
  • Well-organized
  • Experience with and willingness to do data entry
  • Open to constructive feedback and making adjustments
  • Capability to work independently and in teams

  • Hourly compensation of $25 per hour, 7-hours per workday over 10-weeks (The Archival Intern is paid bi-weekly for 42 hours per payroll cycle);

  • A private Q&A session with the foundation’s co-founders and president at the culmination of your internship
  • Free assorted snacks on days worked in the office; for interns who work on Fridays, “FLF” Free Lunch Fridays (10x);
  • A limited New York City MTA metrocard, designated for work days in the office or field trips (containing at least $66 or 24 rides);
  • Gift of select exhibition catalogs and books published by the Vilcek Foundation;
  • A follow-up from a foundation staff member 1-year after the completion of your internship.
