The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) is the nation's leading organization seeking to dramatically alter drug policy here and around the world.   DPA fights for drug policies based on science, compassion, health and human rights. The work is grounded in the principles of harm reduction, an approach that seeks to minimize the negative consequences of both drug use and drug policies.  DPA’s work encompasses a wide array of policy issues, including:

The Position
Assist the Communications Department with the digitization of the journal article collection of the Lindesmith Library.  The Lindesmith Library is one of the world’s leading resources for scientific information on drug policy as well as an outstanding source of information on drug policy reform. The collection of contemporary and historical articles, books, and films is unmatched, and the services of the library play a critical role in advancing an honest and informed public discourse about drug issues.
The Lindesmith Library was founded in 1995 and named after Professor Alfred Lindesmith of Indiana University, the first prominent scholar in the U.S. to challenge conventional thinking about drugs, addiction, and drug policy. The collection contains more than 15,000 books, audio recordings, articles, and videos focusing on drugs and drug policy from economic, criminal justice, public health and other perspectives.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform quality control review of scanned documents
  • Search for digital copies of un-scanned journal articles in electronic databases
  • Prepare paper documents to be scanned, including weeding and boxing
  • Assist in organizing digitized files
Based in DPA’s New York City headquarters, the Digitization Intern will be part of DPA’s Communications team and report to the Managing Director of Communications.  One day of training on a Tuesday will be necessary.
Qualifications
The ideal intern will be highly organized, have a good sense of humor, be able to work with minimum supervision, and be able to commit two days a week.  Previous research or reference experience, library experience, digitization experience, and/or experience in substance abuse related work are pluses.  In return, the volunteer will have the chance to work with a highly skilled and fun team of committed people.
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship. Interns are offered a modest travel stipend.

Position Description: As an intern at the Scholastic Library/Archives, the library school student will be exposed to the day-to-day workings of a corporate special library and archive.  The intern will learn the basics of maintaining an archival book collection and corporate reference work. The intern will assist the Library staff with various tasks including, but not limited to:

1.  Assist in retrospective book cataloging project as well as in cataloging new and incoming books.
  1. Reference work, article searching, using ProQuest, Factiva, Nexis and other sources
  2. Archive maintenance

Cataloging Intern, MetLife Legal Affairs Library
MetLife, Inc. is a leading global provider of insurance, annuities and employee benefit programs, serving 90 million customers. The MetLife Legal Affairs Department is comprised of Compliance, Government Relations and the Law Department. The Legal Affairs Library supports the information and research needs of associates working in these areas.

Internship Description: 
The Intern will work as part of a small team to improve description of and access to information resources. This will include assisting in both the maintenance and enhancement of access to print and online collections through the Library Catalog and other finding aids. This will include Bibliographic data entry and special projects.

 The projects will include:
-          Harmonizing the taxonomy and subject headings of the library catalog
-          Assist in the development of work processes for selecting, creating, editing and importing bibliographic records for various electronic aggregators into catalog.
-          Original and copy cataloging of historical and current collections. Creation of finding aids.

The candidate should have had classwork and work or practical experience with cataloging, subject headings, information architecture and/or taxonomy. Experience with the EOS platform is preferred but not necessary. Experience with Law and/or Insurance subject matter is preferred but not necessary. We will provide introductory training but are looking for a self starter who can also develop a broad understanding of subject matter on their own.

This Internship is a three month post with potential for renewal through six months. This is a paid internship at $12/hr for afternoons approximately 10 hours a week. Darien Library: PT Reader's Advisory Department Internship (meals and transportation paid!)


Darien Library– one of the busiest and highest-ranked public libraries of its size in the country – seeks a service-focused, curious and enthusiastic student to become a member of the Readers' Advisory department for the fall semester. The successful candidate will be a strong reader who is comfortable with social media and mobile technology.

This internship is designed to give the student experience and exposure to all aspects of our unique service department providing reader services to the community. The intern will learn about the inner workings of the Library’s Welcome Desk, providing readers’ advisory and promoting Library collections through physical and virtual spaces. The internship is for one day a week with flexibility based on the student’s schedule. Darien Library will provide meals and Metro-North train passes for the duration of the internship.

Interpublic Group: Library Assistant Intern, Center for Marketing Intelligence



The Interpublic Group of Companies is a leading, global marketing communications company with 43,000 employees worldwide in 130 countries.   The Center for Marketing Intelligence provides IPG operating companies with fast access to timely information, research and analysis.

Job Function:     
This position handles all periodical and library-related subscriptions, coordinates research-related contracts, and resolves billing issues.   The role will provide administrative support to the department head and serve as the department point-person for receipt of vendor invoices, time off record-keeping, the department calendar and reception duty as required.  This is a position with growth potential. This is a paid position. The Intern would be expected to work part-time while in school and full-time (40 hours) while on breaks, such as summer and winter.

Job Responsibilities:
          Order, check-in, route, and maintain periodical (paper and online) subscriptions and passwords.  Troubleshoot missing issues and other problems, working with subscription agent and directly with publishers.  (Learning objective: most libraries perform this activity so it is important to learn as the candidate might do it or supervise it during his or her career)
         Co-ordinate ordering and payment for books, reports, association memberships, etc. (Learning objective: like above, this is a typical library function)
         Maintain small physical library (Learning objective: same as above)
         Co-ordinate organization wide, research-related contracts (e.g., Lexis Nexis):
·         prepare pre-approval forms for user participation
·         reconcile billing issues
·         maintain subscription files
·         monthly accrual report
Learning objective: Working with vendors & contracts has become an important library function: candidate will probably use this experience later in career)
         Process department vendor invoices (Learning objective: typical library work)
         General administrative support, including monitoring dept. time-off records, maintaining phone lists and organization charts
         Expense report processing, meeting and calendar management and phone support for the department head
         Back-up to Office Manager (Learning objective: all of the above three functions are basic to working in an office today – developing the skill set to multi-task, to do detailed work for a variety of people in a variety of different areas)
         Work with Growth Services Team on internal databases as time permits (Learning objective: databases have become an important function in most libraries)
         Light research work (online and Web-based information search) as time permits (Learning objective: this is the #1 skill a future librarian needs)
         Webinar and projection set-up for department meetings

Job Requirements:
           1 - 2 years administrative experience in a corporate environment desirable
           Excellent Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and Powerpoint
           Strong facility with numbers
           Strong organizational and detail skills
           Enrolled in an MLS program (preferably in early stages)
           Research skills

CUNY J-School Research Center: Library Intern


The CUNY J-School Research Center is dedicated to providing students and faculty with the latest research training, tools and resources for journalists. We are seeking an unpaid intern for a one-semester appointment of 10-15 hours per week. The intern will report to the Access Services Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will provide assistance with cataloging, circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan services; help maintain the Research Center Website; maintain the inventory of equipment and resources; disseminate Research Center communications; order supplies; provide basic equipment maintenance and maintenance of library systems; and other duties as assigned by the Chief Librarian.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must
·             Be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program and have a minimum of 18 credits toward their degree.
·             Commit to a one-semester appointment.
·             Have completed a course in cataloging and reference/electronic resources.
·             Have the ability to work effectively and flexibly in a service-oriented, computer-intensive environment.
·             Have the ability to use web authoring and desktop publishing software, like WordPress.

Lesbian Herstory Archives: Library and Archives Internships


The Lesbian Herstory Archives is looking for library and/or archives student interns with a demonstrated interest in Lesbian Studies and LGBT History.
  • Interns will have the opportunity for practical application of archives and library skills in a casual, friendly, dedicated environment
  • Course credit and letters of recommendation will be provided upon request.
  • Interns will be supervised by professional librarians and other archives staff
Requirements
  • Available for a minimum of 10 hours per week.
  • Completion of core graduate-level Library or Archives courses
  • Familiarity with cataloging and archival processing
  • Skilled in the use of MS Office and/or Google Docs and regular office equipment

COLLECTION AREAS
Periodicals - 2 Spaces
Intern will process incoming newspapers, newsletters, journals and magazines, update cataloging records and prepare collections for digitization where necessary.
Special Collections & Reference - 2 Spaces
Interns will process collections and create electronic finding aids, staff the reference desk and provide researcher assistance.
Photographic Digital Imaging - 2 Spaces
Interns will assist with the processing digitization and cataloging photographs and graphics.
Special Preference: Proficiency with Content DM and/or Photoshop
Video Working Group - 2 Spaces
Interns will process and catalog film /videos including relabeling and shifting collections.
Audio Digitization - 2 Spaces
Interns will assist with the cataloging, digitization, indexing and re-housing of audio tapes.
OPAC Working Group - 2 Spaces
Interns will perform database cleanup in a variety of collections and contribute to the design, testing and launch of the LHA's new OPAC.
