General description:
Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) offers internships at its International
Office in New York City. RILM publishes RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (along with a suite
of other resources), which is widely recognized as the world’s premiere abstracted bibliography
on music and related disciplines. RILM was established in 1966 and operates under the joint
sponsorship of the of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and
Documentation Centres (IAML); International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM); the
International Musicological Society (IMS), and the International Society for Popular Music
(IASPM).
 
Internships at RILM offer unique opportunities to learn about all aspects of our operation, while
contributing extensively to our distribution of the world’s writings on music. Intern projects are
designed to benefit both the institution and complement the intern's own interests, skills, and
experience.
 
Interns at RILM have gone on to enjoy successful careers as music librarians, professors, and
other professions. Beyond the academy, an internship at RILM provides valuable and practical
technological and research skills that are transferable across a wide range of sought-after jobs.
 
Intern duties:
Locate descriptive metadata for differentiated authorities (persons, organizations, works,
geographical locations, etc.)
Add descriptive metadata for differentiated authorities
Differentiate authorities where needed
Add links to searchable variants
Validate entities based on established authorities
 
Learning objectives:
Understanding of the functions of descriptive metadata (validation, finding, linking)
Understanding of RILM’s authority structure and the role of descriptive metadata
therein
Demonstrate judgment in the choice and application of metadata for authorities
Demonstrate ability to collaborate as a member of the metadata team
 
Pre-requisites:
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level program related to Information
and/or Library Science
Specialization and/or focus in metadata, library systems, digital libraries, digital
collections, or digital curation
Experience with Excel, databases, and/or MARC
Enthusiasm for library and digital repository metadata
Interest in music
 
Time commitment:
Dates and times are flexible and can be structured according to the intern's needs, but should
cover a period of a minimum of 120 hours.
 
All RILM internships are unpaid, and housing is not provided. College credit may be granted but
must be coordinated in advance with the intern’s university/college.

    Fellowship in Manuscript Cataloging, The Morgan (Midtown)

    Starting in September 2024, join the Morgan Library & Museum's cataloging team as a Shelby White & Leon Levy Fellow in Manuscript Cataloging. It's an excellent opportunity to learn about cataloging individual manuscripts according to DCRM(MSS) focusing on 19th- or 20th-century correspondence. This opportunity is the fifth in a series of Manuscript Cataloging Fellowships offered by the Morgan twice a year from September 2022 to February 2025.     Shelby White & Leon Levy Fellowship in Manuscript Cataloging

    Responsibilities: 

    The Morgan Library & Museum invites applications for the Shelby White & Leon Levy Fellowship in Manuscript Cataloging. The Fellowship is intended for new professionals who have demonstrated engagement with general cataloging or archival processing and wish to enhance their skills through intensive specialized training. This is a unique opportunity for early-career professionals to receive training and mentoring as members of the Morgan Library & Museum curatorial and cataloging team.

    Starting in September 2024, the Fellowship will consist of 650 hours, and applicants will have a choice between full-time (35 hours per week) or part-time (21 hours per week) work in order to complete the 650 hours. Fellows will be assigned to work on specific groups of 19th- or 20th-century correspondence. They will be expected to research the historical and cultural context in which the letters and documents were produced, create collection- and item-level records in CORSAIR—the Morgan's collections database—according to DCRM(MSS), assign accession numbers, and attend to the rehousing and conservation needs of the material. Considerations will be given to applicants’ areas of experience or expertise, such as specific language skills or subject specialization in art, literature, history, film, history of science, etc.

    This opportunity is the fifth in a series of Manuscript Cataloging Fellowships that are offered by the Morgan every September and February from September 2022 to February 2025. The Morgan Library & Museum is grateful to the Leon Levy Foundation for their generous support of these special opportunities.

    The position reports to the Director of Collection Information, and works closely with curators in the Department of Literary and Historical Manuscripts.

    Qualifications: 
    • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or substantial course work towards the degree; a degree (or substantial course work toward one) in related areas, such as art, literature, music, history, film, or history of science, with specialization in working with original historical documents, will also be considered;
    • Experience with reading handwritten documents preferred;
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
    • Knowledge of additional European languages preferred;
    • Knowledge of standard library cataloging tools, such as MARC21, RDA, DCRM, LCSH, and other standard vocabularies preferred;
    • Familiarity with an integrated library system and with the OCLC Connexion client preferred;
    • Experience with archival processing preferred;
    • Understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in interactions with coworkers and contacts and a commitment to reflecting those principles in descriptive work;
    • Ability to work for extended periods at a computer workstation and lift moderately heavy boxes (10 lbs.)

    Schedule: Work hours must fall within the hours of 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

    Compensation: $22/hour. The Fellowship also provides a $500 stipend towards related professional activities, such as conference and workshop attendance, professional memberships, or the acquisition of relevant resources.

    Fall 2024 Archival Internship, Lib of the Jewish Theological Seminary (Morningside Heights)

    Description:
     
    The Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary is seeking an individual for a processing
    archives internship. The Library is located on Broadway and 122nd Street in Manhattan. 
     
    Library holdings include more than 400 archival collections, many of which are unprocessed. In
    addition, donations of new archival collections are made each year.
     
    The intern will commit to work 8 hours per week onsite for 15 weeks to fulfill the requirements
    for the internship. The intern will have the opportunity to accession new collections, create
    inventories of collections, rehouse collections, and if appropriate, arrange and describe a
    collection. The intern will have the opportunity to learn to work with ArchivesSpace. The
    Library’s archivist and archival staff will serve as mentors for the internship
     
    Requirements 
     
    • Enrollment in, or recent completion of, M.L.I.S or similar degree with a
    concentration in archival studies from an ALA-accredited program, or an equivalent
    graduate degree in information science, records management, or preservation.
    • Background in Jewish Studies
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • Ability to work both independently and under supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and meet strict deadlines.
     
    Preferred
     
    • Reading Hebrew language skills, other languages including Yiddish, German are
    a plus
    • Familiarity with cataloging and archival processing
    • Experience working with archives information management applications

    The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is the nation’s largest

    Your Team:
    The Office of Policy and Strategy (OPS) leverages its expertise to guide and support HPD and its many
    Offices in their efforts to deepen their impact, optimize their efficiency, and become more data-driven,
    compliance-attentive, climate-adaptive, and mission-focused. As part of OPS, the Division of Strategic
    Operations and Analytics (SOA) works to increase HPD's impact by analyzing and improving operations
    agency-wide. SOA does this by clarifying HPD program missions, objectives, and stakeholders;
    implementing initiatives that advance HPD's goals; analyzing data to deliver actionable insights to HPD
    programs; and increasing the agency's overall ability to leverage data.

    Your Impact:
    As a Record Management Intern you will assist the Public Information team with critical initiatives to support
    internal staff and operations with record management policy and procedures. You will work with the team
    redeveloping HPD’s records management plan to protect vital records, archive, and support policies and
    procedures to securely manage and enhance access to agency records.
     

    Your Role:
    As a Record Management Intern you will assist with the maintenance of HPD acquisitions / dispositions
    files, documents storage, and document retention. You will support records integration; and assist with
    document management and data validation for HPD’s off-site storage vendor.
     

    Reporting to and working closely with the Records Management Officer on the day-to-day aspects of the
    project the ideal candidate will be an inquisitive problem-solver with:
    • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to break down complex issues or processes into smaller, more manageable tasks
    • Collaborative, team player with the ability to also drive things forward independently
    • Strong attention to detail

    Responsibilities:
    • Receive and integrate executed documents received from Divisions.
    • Responsibilities include documenting and updating the finding aide
    • Assist with the continued documentation and development of Records Management procedures.
    • Assist with integration of all documentation to ensure consistency, accuracy and quality
    deliverables.
    • Assist with performing quality control and providing the same support to all categories of documents
    • Work with Records Management Officer to identify and locate missing documents as they are
    reported or discovered missing.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential material in a professional manner.
    • Contribute to the Records Management project with an overall effort to provide exemplary service.
     

    Qualifications:
    • In order to qualify, candidates currently must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate college
    degree program.
    • Must be in good academic standing, with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
    • Committed to working 21 hours per week.
    • Possess excellent organizational, research, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrate an enthusiastic, professional and resourceful attitude.
    • Previous internship or office experience a plus.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

    The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) Special Collections Labor Library is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual for a not-for-credit Fellow position to weed the collection. The SLU Special Collections Labor Library is located on campus, on the19th floor. 
     
    The SLU Special Collections Labor Library is a resource for and extension of the Labor Studies Department, providing the SLU community with a repository of specialized information on labor history, community-based movements, and public policy. The Special Collections Labor Library supports the college’s mission—to expand higher education opportunities for workers; prepare students who aspire to careers in public service and movements for social justice; promote civic engagement; provide leadership development for union and community activists; and help workers achieve greater economic security—by providing a curated wealth of knowledge in the field of Labor Studies.
     
    The Processing Archivist Fellow will commit to working on-site at the SLU campus and complete the project by August 1, 2024. The fellow will be responsible for weeding the collection and preparing it for cataloging, including identifying which texts should be removed to create an updated body of texts on Labor Studies.
     
    Requirements

    Job Description:

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The Scholastic Corporate Library & Archive seeks a graduate intern for the summer 2024 semester to be an integral part of the information services team contributing to archival research on children’s paperback books and the growth of home and classroom libraries. This is a project-based position with specific deliverables due at various points during the semester, starting in June 2023 and ending in August 2023. The Intern will report to Scholastic Inc.’s Director of Information Services & Cultural Insight and will work closely with the library staff, who will help provide guidance on handling the archival collection.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Digitize relevant corporate history files, catalog, and book club flyers

    • Curate and collate historic data on paperback book market

    • Scan covers and record critical metadata for historic Teenage Book Club titles from Scholastic Book/Magazine Services

    • Collaborate with library colleagues on draft report of findings for senior leadership, communications, marketing, publicity and social media teams

    • Cataloging and database management as it relates to updating bibliographic records, data collection and entry, and file organization, using SirsiDynix Workflows, Microsoft Excel and Google drive

    • Provide reference services support for the library’s Director, Senior Information Specialist and Associate Librarians

    • Assist with circulation of the collection; staff the reference desk as needed

    • A high level of attention to detail; experience handling archival materials is preferred, experience digitizing fragile materials a plus

    • Excellent organizational, analytical skills with attention to detail; must be comfortable working with MARC 21, LCSH, RDA, AACR2 and local controlled vocabularies and subject tags; experience with SirsiDynix Workflows is ideal
