Interpublic Group: Library Assistant Intern, Center for Marketing Intelligence



The Interpublic Group of Companies is a leading, global marketing communications company with 43,000 employees worldwide in 130 countries.   The Center for Marketing Intelligence provides IPG operating companies with fast access to timely information, research and analysis.

Job Function:     
This position handles all periodical and library-related subscriptions, coordinates research-related contracts, and resolves billing issues.   The role will provide administrative support to the department head and serve as the department point-person for receipt of vendor invoices, time off record-keeping, the department calendar and reception duty as required.  This is a position with growth potential. This is a paid position. The Intern would be expected to work part-time while in school and full-time (40 hours) while on breaks, such as summer and winter.

Job Responsibilities:
 •         Order, check-in, route, and maintain periodical (paper and online) subscriptions and passwords.  Troubleshoot missing issues and other problems, working with subscription agent and directly with publishers.  (Learning objective: most libraries perform this activity so it is important to learn as the candidate might do it or supervise it during his or her career)
•         Co-ordinate ordering and payment for books, reports, association memberships, etc. (Learning objective: like above, this is a typical library function)
•         Maintain small physical library (Learning objective: same as above)
•         Co-ordinate organization wide, research-related contracts (e.g., Lexis Nexis):
·         prepare pre-approval forms for user participation
·         reconcile billing issues
·         maintain subscription files
·         monthly accrual report
Learning objective: Working with vendors & contracts has become an important library function: candidate will probably use this experience later in career)
•         Process department vendor invoices (Learning objective: typical library work)
•         General administrative support, including monitoring dept. time-off records, maintaining phone lists and organization charts
•         Expense report processing, meeting and calendar management and phone support for the department head
•         Back-up to Office Manager (Learning objective: all of the above three functions are basic to working in an office today – developing the skill set to multi-task, to do detailed work for a variety of people in a variety of different areas)
•         Work with Growth Services Team on internal databases as time permits (Learning objective: databases have become an important function in most libraries)
•         Light research work (online and Web-based information search) as time permits (Learning objective: this is the #1 skill a future librarian needs)
•         Webinar and projection set-up for department meetings

Job Requirements:
•           1 - 2 years administrative experience in a corporate environment desirable
•           Excellent Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and Powerpoint
•           Strong facility with numbers
•           Strong organizational and detail skills
•           Enrolled in an MLS program (preferably in early stages)
•           Research skills

CUNY J-School Research Center: Library Intern


The CUNY J-School Research Center is dedicated to providing students and faculty with the latest research training, tools and resources for journalists. We are seeking an unpaid intern for a one-semester appointment of 10-15 hours per week. The intern will report to the Access Services Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will provide assistance with cataloging, circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan services; help maintain the Research Center Website; maintain the inventory of equipment and resources; disseminate Research Center communications; order supplies; provide basic equipment maintenance and maintenance of library systems; and other duties as assigned by the Chief Librarian.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must
·             Be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program and have a minimum of 18 credits toward their degree.
·             Commit to a one-semester appointment.
·             Have completed a course in cataloging and reference/electronic resources.
·             Have the ability to work effectively and flexibly in a service-oriented, computer-intensive environment.
·             Have the ability to use web authoring and desktop publishing software, like WordPress.
·             Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
·             Have experience searching the Internet.
·             Have the ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.

Lesbian Herstory Archives: Library and Archives Internships


The Lesbian Herstory Archives is looking for library and/or archives student interns with a demonstrated interest in Lesbian Studies and LGBT History.
  • Interns will have the opportunity for practical application of archives and library skills in a casual, friendly, dedicated environment
  • Course credit and letters of recommendation will be provided upon request.
  • Interns will be supervised by professional librarians and other archives staff
Requirements
  • Available for a minimum of 10 hours per week.
  • Completion of core graduate-level Library or Archives courses
  • Familiarity with cataloging and archival processing
  • Skilled in the use of MS Office and/or Google Docs and regular office equipment

COLLECTION AREAS
Periodicals - 2 Spaces
Intern will process incoming newspapers, newsletters, journals and magazines, update cataloging records and prepare collections for digitization where necessary.
Special Collections & Reference - 2 Spaces
Interns will process collections and create electronic finding aids, staff the reference desk and provide researcher assistance.
Photographic Digital Imaging - 2 Spaces
Interns will assist with the processing digitization and cataloging photographs and graphics.
Special Preference: Proficiency with Content DM and/or Photoshop
Video Working Group - 2 Spaces
Interns will process and catalog film /videos including relabeling and shifting collections.
Audio Digitization - 2 Spaces
Interns will assist with the cataloging, digitization, indexing and re-housing of audio tapes.
OPAC Working Group - 2 Spaces
Interns will perform database cleanup in a variety of collections and contribute to the design, testing and launch of the LHA's new OPAC.

Museum of the City of New York: Archival Internships

Fall 2012 

Internship Description: The Museum of the City of New York is currently seeking library school students interested in a Fall archives internship. Interns will work with both the Museum’s Theater Collection or Manuscripts and Ephemera Collection and will have the opportunity to gain experience in cataloging, handling fragile objects, evaluating the condition of the object for conservation and preservation, collection processing, and/or writing finding aids.  Interns may assist with reference inquiries and the Museum’s ongoing digitization project, as needed. Projects will vary according to an individual’s skill set and interests.
 
About the Collections:

Theater Collection
The Museum’s Theater Collections document theatrical activity in New York City from the late 18th century to the present day. The intern will assist in a variety of ongoing projects including assessments of prints and photographs in the Collection. Tasks include updating object records in the Museum’s collections management database and re-housing objects into archival folders and boxes. Material types include books, design renderings, posters, manuscripts, photographs, phonograph records, and ephemera.
 
Manuscripts and Ephemera Collection

These objects document the day-to-day life of New Yorkers over the last 300 years with the bulk of the materials dating to late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ephemera comprise a variety of formats, including print material such as menus, invitations, pamphlets, and handbills; textiles such as pennants, sashes, ties, and scarves; and three-dimensional artifacts such as badges, buttons, children’s identification tags, and promotional items. The manuscript collection includes papers of influential New Yorkers and their families. The subject of the material encompasses a wide scope of events and subjects pertaining to development of New York City.
 
Requirements:

Each internship requires a minimum commitment of two full days a week (7 hours), scheduled during the Monday - Friday workweek. Internships are unpaid. Preference will be given to students completing the internship for course credit. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Masters program for Library Science. Interns must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Students with a focus in Archival Studies and an interest in objects of material culture are encouraged to apply.

MTV Networks: Nickelodeon On-Air Operations Internship



Department Overview -
The broadcast operations team manages the delivery of Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group on-air promos, commercials, and episodes while overseeing the operations for all aspects of execution and fulfillment of on and off channel content. This opportunity is perfect for candidates interested in learning about the various departments the library supports within the Kids and Family group. The Operations library intern will leave with an understanding of the library, the promo delivery process from concept to completion and be extensively exposed to the ongoing digital work flow expansion project.
Key Responsibilities -
Support the broadcast operations team, assist with collecting material for recycling or archiving of tapes to the main MTVN Concourse Library, digitizing various media, pulling paperwork, and fulfilling audio and video requests for all the Nickelodeon channels.  Work with MTVN proprietary systems including OAP, NickPromoView, and AliasWeb as you familiarize yourself with a process that is transferable to all large broadcast companies. Assist with the verification of promos and other media for consistency and guideline adherence.
Preferred Majors and Grade Level:
Preferred major in Library Services Radio/Television, Communication Technology, Digital Media, or Production.

Anti-Defamation League: Archive Internship for the Fall Semester




The Library and Archives Department at the Anti-Defamation League is looking for an energetic, creative MLS candidate for an internship in archives management.  Preference will be given to a candidate with an interest and course work in archives.  Meticulous attention to detail is a job requirement.  Projects will include:  Archival searches for historic ADL publications; digitization of ADL publications; expansion of the archival database by converting handwritten information to electronic format; creation of a digital photo archive. 

This is a paid internship.  We are seeking a candidate who can start on or near September 4th.  Hours and the end date of the internship can be mutually agreed upon, with a desirable work week being 12-15 hours.  ADL is located in mid-Manhattan.
