Archives Processing Intern
Department: R & Company Archives
Reports to: Archives Manager
 
About Us:
R & Company is the pre-eminent design gallery in New York City, representing contemporary
artists as well as a wealth of important vintage furniture and design objects. The gallery
presents 7-10 exhibitions annually in its Tribeca locations and participates in international
design fairs in the United States and abroad. 
 
Within R & Company, we hold an important and extensive non-circulating library and
archival collection covering the history of art, design, and architecture from circa 1900 to
the present. The general library includes many rare and out-of-print titles, with specialties in
international design overviews from 1950-60, period pamphlets, and catalogs. In the archives
and special collections, R & Company holds a significant range of materials, including a
drawings collection, a vast collection of periodicals, photographs, and ephemera, an AV media
collection, and many other rare resources related to the history of modern design.
 
Position Summary:
R & Company has recently acquired the remaining materials from the estate of the designer
and architect Greta Magnusson Grossman, including drawings, paintings, photographs, and
other ephemera. We seek an intern to assist in processing all materials with a critical eye.
Duties include surveying, analyzing, and cataloging the collection, arranging, occasionally
cleaning, and performing basic preservation of collection materials. 
 
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have some experience or coursework completed in library/
information science or archival studies and/or experience working in a library or collections
management setting. Individuals with commensurate experience or coursework completed in
decorative arts, design, or architectural history are strongly encouraged to apply.
Must be able to perform detailed work consistently, be reliable, and be capable of lifting
cartons weighing up to 40 pounds. The ideal candidate will have some experience with
FileMaker Pro (or a similar database system). 
 
Position details:
This is an unpaid, for-credit internship.
