P/T - Archival Intern - American Irish Historical Society (Manhattan)
The American Irish Historical Society is seeking an archival intern for the fall semester to assist with our library and archival collections. Located on 5th Avenue across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Society's library houses more than 10,000 volumes on Irish and Irish American history. The Society's archival collections include 19th century newspapers and journals, institutional records, and the personal papers of political figures such as Daniel F. Cohalan.
Tasks will include:
- Cataloging and shelving books
- Sorting archival collections and creating finding aids
- Assisting researchers
- Other projects as assigned
The candidate must be currently enrolled in a Master of Library Science program, with a concentration in archives and special collections. Knowledge of Irish history is preferred. Internship hours are to be scheduled during regular work hours, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. This is an unpaid internship that must be used for academic credit. P/T - 5 fall paid positions available - Ask a Librarian Internship - Columbia University Libraries [CUL] (Manhattan)
Five (5) Positions Available
The Ask a Librarian Internship program provides current library school students with hands-on experience in several areas of academic librarianship. Interns will work collaboratively with mentoring library staff to assist users with the IM component of the Ask a Librarian service, answering chat (IM) questions from users.
Other projects, such as writing instructional content and creating tutorials, may also be available as time permits. Additionally, interns could be assigned projects pertaining to collection development or provide reference at one of the Libraries reference desks.
Interns will be appointed on a semester basis and may apply to renew the internship for up to one year. Preference is given to candidates who have completed at least 12 credits in an accredited library school program and have already taken their basic reference course.
POSITION AVAILABLE: September 8, 2015. Position is subject to renewal each semester that the incumbent is enrolled in an accredited library school program.
WORK SCHEDULE: Work schedule is variable, but requires at least one evening shift of four hours working remotely and six hours on campus working with a librarian for a total of 10 hours per week. Students select an IM shift as part of the internship. Current evening and weekend hours are Sunday to Thursday, 5pm to 9pm [Sunday hours can vary slightly].
DUTIES: Providing research assistance to individuals and groups via chat (IM). Referring users to appropriate staff from the Libraries. Other projects as assigned by intern supervisor.
REQUIRED: Must be current (or enrolled) graduate student in an accredited library school program during the fall 2015 semester
PREFERRED: Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Coursework in reference service and completion of at least 12 credits in an accredited library school program. Strong commitment to service. Ability to evaluate, understand, and respond to research questions by utilizing knowledge of library resources. Interest in academic librarianship. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a face-paced, team environment.

P/T - digital asset management volunteers needed - Metropolitan Museum of Art (Manhattan)
The Digital Asset Management Group, Collection Information, Department of Digital Media at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is looking for current college seniors and graduate students who are interested in volunteering from July 1, 2015-June 31, 2016. Under the supervision of professional staff, volunteers will gain first-hand experience by assisting with special projects that range from working digital content related to the museum, and participating in digitization projects. Cataloguing opportunities and additional responsibilities are also a possibility.
The Digital Asset Management Group of the Department of Collection Information is responsible for the oversight and management of all digital assets in the Museum’s digital asset management system, establishing metadata requirements for cataloguing of relevant digital assets within the DAM, streamlining the deployment of digital assets from the DAM to the CMS, overseeing the application customization and integration with other systems.
We are a very busy department and can offer a variety of work for anyone intrigued by an alternative library experience.
This volunteer opportunity should ideally begin as soon as possible and ideally would be from July 1, 2015-June 31, 2016 and be a minimum seven hours (ideally one work day) day per week. Additional hours could be considered. The department is only open Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00 and closed on the weekends.
Volunteers will be eligible for discounts at the Museum’s public restaurant, Membership Dining Room, the Museum’s retail stores, and free admission to all other New York City art museums.

Internship Descriptions
The New-York Historical Society seeks an intern for the fall 2015 semester to gain
hands-on processing experience and academic credit working with the organization’s
institutional archive. New-York Historical currently holds approximately 1,600 linear
feet of institutional archives, recording the Society's history from its founding in 1804 to
the present. These records document institution-wide activities such as collecting,
exhibitions, public programs and research that have formed the backbone of the Society’s
work throughout its history. Arranging and describing these records is currently the
subject of a 2-year grant-funded project.
The Archival Intern will work under the supervision of the Project Archivist to process
completely a record group or other significant portion of the archive. The internship
emphasizes archival description for paper, textual documents. Description will involve
writing administrative history, scope, arrangement, and other notes for the records;
identifying significant content in the archival material; documenting the records in the
collection management system, Archivists’ Toolkit (AT); generating a complete DACScompliant
finding aid using AT; and establishing name and subject access terms with
controlled vocabularies. The internship will also involve some physical processing,
including arrangement of the records and basic conservation practices.

F/T Temp - Medical Library Internship - Hospital for Special Surgery (
The Hospital
for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a motivated Lib rary/
Information Science student with an interest in Medical (Hospital) libraries to
assist the Medical Lib rarian and the
Archivist to manage HSS Archives digital assess. Duties include creating and
managing metadata, importing and managing digital objects in PastPerfect, and
creating web presence for the HSS Archives. In addition the library intern is
to assist the library’s daily operation and will be responsible for the
library’s interlibrary loan service.
Duties:
This
internship opportunity is focused on the special project of digital asset
management of HSS Medical Archives digital objects, as well as developing a resource
guide, how to guides, and designing web page for the HSS Archives.
The library’s
daily operation incudes:
Assist in interlibrary loan and
document delivery (NLMs Docline)
Assist
HSS residents/fellows/staff in use of library resources
-Including PubMed, Ovid, MDConsult,
and RefWorks
Assist
providing library orientations
Desired Qualifications:
The
opportunity is available to any Library Science student with an interest in
medical libraries, but special consideration will be given to candidates with
the following:
-Completion
of coursework in Health Sciences Resources.
-Experience
with Content Management Systems and/or web design.
-Interests
in copyright, scientific and academic publishing
-Previous
library experience.
-Strong
communication skills.
Compensation:
The
internship position is being offered with a stipend amount of $20/day.
Hours:
The candidate
would need to be able to commit a minimum of 8 hours a week (2 days at 4 hours
per day e.g.) to this position for a minimum of 6 weeks. The schedule is
somewhat flexible, but would need to be Monday through Friday daytime hours.
