New York Times News Research Desk Summer Internship

The position is for an unpaid, for-credit, academic-year intern. Interns work 8 hours per week for the duration of the semester.

We are seeking a computer savvy, creative library student. Familiarity with programming, database management, and/or cataloging is a plus.

Job Description

1) Assist in maintaining News Research's Intranet site.

2) Assist in Librarian functions, such as cataloging, organizing and marketing the library materials.

3) Assist in creating training materials developed by news researchers, and assist in news research specific marketing and training.

Intern will receive mentoring and training with regard to library specific functions such as cataloging, newsroom training, knowledge management and marketing library resources. Intern will also have the opportunity to shadow News Researchers, receive training and guidance in research techniques, in addition to learning how to navigate database resources proficiently.

The candidate must submit a resume, letter of interest and letter of recommendation from their university. They must receive academic credit and provide a letter from their university saying how much credit they will get.

The Newsweek Research Center has an internship opportunity for one or two students for the Fall 2008 semester.

The Research Center uses leading-edge information technologies to deliver research to our editorial staff in offices in New York and around the world.

Our interns will work on indexing of our cover image database, assist with copy cataloging and adding links to our catalog, and processing of our electronic feed of Newsweek stories. There is also the opportunity to assist with news research.

Requirements: completion of at least one information organization /cataloging course, an online searching course, and currently matriculating in an MLS program. CANDIDATES SHOULD REVIEW THEIR PROGRAM’S REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY (E.G. CREDITS NEEDED) BEFORE APPYLING.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is detail-oriented and interested in the technical services aspects of librarianship, including metadata and tagging. Hands-on cataloging or database management preferred. Must have some experience with HTML authoring and Microsoft desktop applications including Word and Excel. Interest in news and current events a plus.

ABC News

The ABC News Research Center, located on West 66th St. in Manhattan, is seeking an intern to work on our staff for the Fall 2008 semester.

The selected intern will contribute to the following efforts:

• Assist the ABC News Research staff in writing short descriptions of historical news events.
  
• Contribute to and maintain an in-house database used to identify potential spokespeople for ABC News. Conduct associated research. The intern will check database records for accuracy, seek out and research new candidates for inclusion, and prepare promotional emails highlighting experts to ABC News staff.


• Fact check biographical material and other general research center tasks.


• Assist in the maintenance of collaborative SharePoint websites.

Dates and hours are flexible within normal business hours.

The successful candidate should have excellent research instincts, some experience with online research tools, strong writing skills, and a genuine interest in news.

This is a paid position that must be filled by a person currently enrolled as a student in a graduate school of library/information science.
