Fall 2011 Internship Opportunities at Scholastic Inc/ SoHo
 Requirements: Library School Student must be enrolled in an internship course for school credit and must provide proof of registration in internship class.

Hours: Flexible

Position Description: As an intern at the Scholastic Library/Archives, the library school student will be exposed to the day-to-day workings of a corporate special library and archive.  The intern will learn the basics of maintaining an archival book collection and corporate reference work. The intern will assist the Library staff with various tasks including, but not limited to:

1.  Assist in retrospective book cataloging project as well as in cataloging new and incoming books.
  1. Reference work, article searching, using ProQuest, Factiva, Nexis and other sources
  2. Archive maintenance

WCS Archives Internship

The Wildlife Conservation Society Archives (headquartered at the Bronx Zoo) is currently accepting applications for internships from graduate students preparing for careers in libraries and archives. 

WCS Archives Internships are intended to provide opportunities to participate in various components of archival processing and description.  Projects include surveying, arranging, and describing archival collections; entering data into an archival management system; and creating EAD finding aids.

Interns must schedule their work Monday through Friday, 10-5.  WCS Internships are unpaid.  The application deadline for Fall 2011 internships is July 15.

About the organization:
Founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society, the Wildlife Conservation Society is committed to saving wildlife and wild places worldwide.  This initiative is carried out through science, global conservation, education, and the management of the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo.  The WCS Library supports the activities of over 200 scientists and other staff members, both locally and globally.  The WCS Archives includes records related to the history of the Bronx Zoo, the New York Aquarium, and other institutions and activities of the WCS.

Roosevelt Island Historical Society - Summer intern position - PAID

Do you enjoy local history? Join us on our unique historical island and learn more than you ever
imagined about our history from the 1600’s to the present day. 

Our archives contain many architectural histories, institutional records, personal stories and family histories of those who lived, worked, were hospitalized or imprisoned on the island.  The reading will not be boring!!!
The RIHS is seeking a summer intern for the months of July and August.
  •  Intern will assist with RIHS collection management and registration.
  •  The responsibilities will include assisting with recording, cataloging, organizing, and inventorying the society records and permanent collection, performing preventative care of items in storage.
  •  Interns should be enrolled in an Historic Preservation, Art History, Museum Studies, and/or Local   History Program.
  •  All level students will be considered.
Work will be on Roosevelt Island.
The island is easily accessible by aerial tramway or F subway train.

Columbia University’s C.V. Starr East Asian Library, Makino Collection Internship

The Makino Collection on the History of East Asian Film is an extraordinary archive of materials chronicling the history of Japanese and East Asian film, collected by the renowned documentary film maker and film historian Makino Mamoru.

The collection contains material dating back to the earliest moving pictures in Japan and the start of domestic film production during the Meiji period (1868–1912), and continues to the present. It includes a wealth of rare print materials including full runs of trade press and fan periodicals, fliers, posters, and other publicity materials.

The Makino Collection Internship program provides current library school students with hands-on experience in several areas of academic librarianship. Interns will work collaboratively with mentoring library staff to help design and create a website and blog for the Makino Collection and to help process archival materials.

The Intern will be appointed for the Spring semester (2011). Preference is given to candidates who have Japanese language ability or Chinese language ability and a web design background.

POSITION AVAILABLE: January, 2011. This is an unpaid internship.

WORK SCHEDULE: Work schedule is variable, 150 hours per semester.

DUTIES: Designing the Makino Collection website in consultation with the Archivist. Processing includes working with the Archivist to identify and describe items
for the finding aid, re-housing materials in archival safe folders and boxes, and
inputting data into Excel files for the finding aid among other tasks.

REQUIRED: Must be current (or enrolled) graduate student in an accredited library school program during the Spring 2011 semester. Candidate must have either Japanese language ability or Chinese language ability, and knowledge of web design.

PREFERRED: Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to evaluate, understand, and describe Japanese or Chinese materials. Interest in academic librarianship. Interest in film studies.

Internship opportunity at the Anti-Defamation League

The Anti-Defamation League is looking for an energetic, creative MLS student to fill a position in the Rita and Leo Greenland Library and Research Center. The position is paid, and ADL will cooperate with your university to obtain credit for the work experience, if needed. The internship is for 12 hours a week for the spring semester. An interest in working with library and archival materials is essential. Also required are accuracy in creating and maintaining records, as well as good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

The intern may have some or all of the following responsibilities:

Organizing, preserving and indexing archival materials

Digitizing library publications

Assisting with cataloging books, electronic documents, audio-visual materials and pamphlets

Designing and implementing systems for special collections

Other related projects, as needed

MTV internship

Time commitment: Flexible, but must take place on weekdays between 10-6. Minimum 16 hours per week, for ten week period.

Location: Midtown Manhattan

Responsibilities:-Digital archiving - involves cataloging of both photo and video material for MTV Networks archive. Video archiving includes logging, segmenting, clipping. Knowledge of broadcast media standards and terminology helpful.-Assisting with taxonomy development. Knowledge of industry cataloging standards preferred. (FRBR, EBU, Dublin Core, RDA knowledge particularly helpful).-Work with MTVN librarians on other projects as they arise.

Requirements: Student must be receiving school credit for internship hours. Position is unpaid.

McGraw-Hill Archives Internship

Intern - Archivist/Researcher-9519

The McGraw-Hill Companies has an Archivist/Researcher internship opportunity that will allow the successful graduate library school candidate an opportunity to conduct research and gain practical experience in records and archival management. We are looking for an energetic, team oriented student to participate as a key member of our Marketing department for an 8 - 10 week assignment.

This is a 10 - 15 hours per week paid internship in New York City. Only local candidates need apply.

  • Inventorying the archives collection of audio and visual materials.
  • Scope the existing archival collection to identify missing materials and locate replacements.
  • Fact checking and proofing all historical content on the McGraw-Hill Corporate Archives Intranet site.
  • Conducting basic research using Nexis, Capital IQ, S&P Net Advantage and other online research tools.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be enrolled at an ALA Accredited Library School
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Photoshop
  • Background in building or editing with web sites preferred but not required

NYC Dept of Environmental Protection – Summer Internship

Description: The DEP Office of Records and Archives Management is looking for a student intern for summer 2009. Primary projects are re-housing and inventorying collections, as well as digitizing collections and assisting with user requests as necessary. The major holdings include the long-term and permanent records produced by NYC agencies responsible for water supply and distribution dating back to 1830s, including engineering/architectural drawings, photography and administrative records.

Qualifications: Candidates must be enrolled in a college/university program to be eligible. Must have a genuine interest in archives, history, engineering or related. Curiosity and communication skills are critical. Must be detail-oriented, have good organizational skills and be able to work independently. Must be able to lift/move 25-40 pound boxes. Must be computer literate; MS Excel is required, Adobe Photoshop and MS Access desirable. Possible continuation through fall semester also desirable.

Compensation: Pay rate is $9.48/hour. The position is full-time Mon-Fri, 9-5 (no weekends). Internship runs 6/01/2009 through 8/28/2009 with possibility to extend through the school year. The Archive is located on the east side of Manhattan.
